What is wrong with teaching kids respect for firearms under controlled, safe conditions? I'd submit those that learn this way become very responsible gun owners that understand that firearms...kill.

Exactly right.

Nothing wrong whatsoever...as long as they don't have their hands on loaded weapons that they have no business with their hands on! They're kids first.

I take no issue with parents and instructors showing kids how to properly care for and use small caliber rifles for the likes of hunting deer, etc.

I was just shaking my head at the awful timing of the tweet.

You don't hunt deer with small caliber rifles.

The entire situation is tragic because it didn't have to happen.

Incredibly poor decision-making and a bizarre lack of common sense brought this result. Quite frankly, the laws of unintended consequences are applied due to stupidity. The prices for all are quite high.

The parents get a major portion of the blame IMHO. Their price is dealing with the ramifications on their innocent daughter as she relives the nightmare, blames herself, gets depressed especially when young teenage punks taunt her about "murdering" someone, etc.

The deceased instructor gets the rest and his price was a sudden, totally unexpected early death.

The girl must live with it and will experience guilt her entire life. The blame, depression, and regret will erupt in anger at some point in her early adulthood. Seriously, imagine when this 9 year old becomes an adult and realizes her parents ARE indeed truly culpable. There will be an emotional argument over this traumatizing event.

Dude, shut up. What's a small caliber defined as anyway? Most times anything under .30 is considered small...and there's plenty of deer hunting done within this range and plenty of guns to do it with. It just requires more skill. But again, that's not the real point. You don't start teaching a kid with an uzi!

Quote:Every deer hunter has a caliber of rifle that he or she will swear by as being the best gun for deer, but the truth is many rifles are effective for harvesting whitetails. This is because whitetail deer are a thin skinned, light boned animal. Probably the most common calibers are .243, .270, 300 mag., 7mm mag., 30-30, 30-06, and .308. Each has its advantages and disadvantages and if you are in the market for a new rifle or your first rifle, take the time to consider each one.

The .243 is a popular round particularly for varmints, but is widely used for whitetails. Legislature has set minimum requirements for muzzle velocity, bullet energy, and diameter of .240 in thereby making the .243 an entry-level weapon for deer. This caliber is prized for its flat shooting, low recoil, and accuracy capabilities. Your success with the smaller .243 will depend greatly upon your own skill level and a well placed shot. You will not have the reliability of punching through bone on say a shoulder shot that you would with a more powerful round. I have several friends who swore by a .243 and had killed many deer with it until each of them lost a big buck due to insufficient power.

When it comes to whitetail deer I would not recommend a caliber less than a .270. A .270 offers very manageable recoil, is flat shooting, and has enough power to blow through a deer’s shoulder. A 150 grain bullet will provide adequate knock down power at extended ranges up to 1,000 yards with speeds exceeding 3,000 ft/sec..

RE: Famous last words ==> "All right full auto"
The basic problem that I see with this situation is that this seems to be more of an entertainment venue than a gun range. All of the poor decision making on the part of the owner, instructor, and especially parents flows from there.

Now, the NRA - an organization founded to advocate for safe, responsible gun ownership - is ironically going to be put in the position of defending a situation that exhibits neither of those traits.

Okie, you're just as sick as tommy boy. One leans far right and the other far left and never the twain shall meet. You must have all camouflaged shirts and pants like Jay Leno has denim. Correct me if I'm wrong.

Don't know what you are talking about Roscoe. There is nothing far right about the full auto shoot.

I take it you are a gun control guy?

No, I'm not. I think everyone that wants to buy one legally should have one. I don't and it's not because I'm averse to having one, my wife is afraid of them because of what happened while growing up in a household with weapons. I used to own a .22 and that was because it was given to me. I never needed it to go hunting as I don't hunt deer, only small game and I would use my 10 pump pellet gun which would fit the bill.

I have a sling shot. LOL

I've been thinking about going to that auto shoot. I've never been.

Most of the shooting we do is out in the country at the dump or down at the creek. Never been much of a hunter. My family is full of hardcore hunters and fishermen. I never liked killing animals and kinda hated it when my grandad made me go as a child.

I'll blow up an old toilet with a 12 gauge no problem.

Pretty much every conservative poster on this forum came out saying they were sickened by the stupidity displayed in this incident, and yet here you are doing nothing but talking about the greatness of guns.
