RE: Rod Carey on 670 The Score @11:40 - Barry Rozner & Matt Abbatacola
Some of you are making the assumption that Carey (and Doeren and other coaches) are personally the way they portray themselves in the media. Nothing could be further from the truth. First off, usually, Carey is pretty personable with the media and very personable with the fans when he interacts with them. True, he's not too forthcoming with information, but name me a coach that is. And, a lot of times, regarding injuries, there are all sorts of HIPAA regulations that he has to abide by (you'd be shocked at the kind of simple stuff that he's not even allowed to know, or if he does can't say anything).
That doesn't have anything to do with the QB thing, true.
Doeren was very personable if you were talking to him about things other than football. So was Novak. Doeren only came off as Darth Vader if you wanted to talk to him about the 2-deep at a HASF event. If you asked him how his family was doing, he would talk for quite a while.
Carey's first media exposure was for the Orange Bowl. He got the job a few hours before the announcement was made. And, immediately the Herbstreit thing ratcheted up the media scrutiny to levels nobody has ever seen in Dekalb. Howard Fletcher, Bill Mallory, Jerry Pettibone, Joe Novak, Jerry Kill, and Dave Doeren never had to deal with that crush... ever. Think about it, the closest was probably in 2003, and that mostly was an SI piece, local media, and Craig James saying mean crap about NIU.
ESPN wasn't the ubiquitous presence it has become, where they create the stories and then drive the stories. First there was the Herbstreit crap, which even though it hurt, probably was great for hyping the game to the average football fan. Then, the week of the Orange Bowl JL6 says the quote about making FSU quit in the 4th quarter. After the game, Carey made a mistake and protected his kid from the media and said it was never said (but it was). Then, he got barbecued for 24 hours over it, including by people here. Anyone doubt that he changed his approach toward the media after that?
At the end of my long-ass rant, 7's probably right. It's the end of fall camp and he's probably exhausted. I'm dealing with the same thing right now (sorry Maddawg, that's why I've been a dick to you the last 2 weeks). My guess is everyone around the program just wants to get after it and have something real to talk about. All of these training camp storylines (yes, including the QB thing) is just mental masturbation.
