Quote:"The challenges of a struggling economy and continued declines in patient volume and reimbursement over the last decade have placed mounting financial pressures upon CRH. The hospital’s financial struggles were further compounded by a significant number of physician departures and two recent fires, the most significant of which shut down the facility for more than six weeks. Even the expansion of Medicaid in Arkansas and impressive enrollment rates in the Private Option by citizens in the service area were not enough to overcome these issues,"

It's a shame. Housed some pretty good docs there. Plus, you could read about the history of quilting while strolling the halls there, seriously. They had that on display there for years.

I recall MS finally kicked in some funding. Are y'all saying the AR leg still is not providing funding? Ridiculous.

People will die because of this. It should be illegal to let that place fold. It did have its share of medical malpractice cases over the years, though.

You're right people are going to die. Many of them won't have the time to get to the MED, Methodist University, or Methodist South before they expire. You're talking about adding 15-60 minutes to the ambulance ride of every sick and injured person.

West Memphis voted recently at ~80% to support the hospital with a local sales tax increase. They basically don't have the cash position to operate until December when they would get the tax money. The recent fire took every penny of cash they had. Hence, why they are shutting the ER down tonight.

Disproportionate Share Hospital payments are also fading into the sunset. Arkansas' medicaid expansion should have made these payments unnecessary. I'm surprised that they couldn't have reached some of arrangement wherein to get the bridge financing needed to hold them over.

And the small ones around here are keeping their heads above water with big internal shakeups --some of which includes hiring middle management companies, especially in the administrative areas.

I don't know the particulars but this practice gets rid of union 'interference'. Plus retirement benefits for long time employees are being fazed out. Bottom lines look better for investors.

But the answer to the mess is too complex to even contemplate. It's like some big train headed for a blown up bridge and no one seems able to stop it. It's been on that track for decades--helped along by litigation, drug companies and people's general ideas about their own health care.

We have a unique problem here, though. Our hospital gets overrun every Summer by the roving bands of homeless kids under 30 years of age. Depending on where they gather the area's population increases by as much as 30,000. Kind of like a plague of locusts.
