OT: NFL/DirecTV on verge of $1.4 Billion deal with Sunday Ticket...
Look at this deal with just DirecTV and the NFL Sunday Ticket...everyone from the NBA, NHL, MLB and the NCAA/P5 is just playing for peanuts...from the article:

By John Ourand & Daniel Kaplan, Staff Writers

Published August 25, 2014

The NFL is on the verge of a deal with DirecTV for its Sunday Ticket package that will see its average annual rights fee increase to between $1.3 billion and $1.4 billion over the next decade.

Though several issues still need to be ironed out, a broad agreement has been reached on the price and length of a deal, according to multiple sources.

DirecTV’s rights fee will increase by a mid-single-digit percentage each year in a deal that will sync up with the NFL’s other TV deals, which run into the next decade. ESPN’s deal runs through the 2021 regular season; the CBS, Fox and NBC deals go into 2022. It’s not clear exactly when DirecTV’s new Sunday Ticket deal would end, but sources said it would be either 2021 or 2022.

Is that much higher than the current contract? I though they were currently paying $1.1 billion per year?

Not really...but this is just for the rights to broadcast OTA games to out of market audience...they are just going to pocket a cool $1.4 Billion to show games already on TV through Fox and CBS...Getting paid basically twice is nice...$3.1 Billion from Fox/CBS/NBC....$1.9 Billion from ESPN for the Monday Night Games and now $1.4 Billion from DirecTV NFL Sunday Ticket...Cha-Ching..04-cheers

story said they currently are paying 1 billion per year. So 1.3-1.4 would be a 30-40% increase.

The 2 biggest losers in this right now- Pac 12 network and the Longhorn Network. Lots of folks have Directv only for the Sunday Ticket and won't give that up. Pac 12 is going to have to make a pretty hard decision now.

Which is why ATT is trying to by them out with that absurd $48 billion deal.

I'm one of those people who only has it for Sunday Ticket--but connect the dots to the Pac-12 and LHN for me.

If Directv hadn't kept the exclusive for Sunday Ticket- a lot of folks would have left for other companies that have Pac 12 and LHN. Now, P12 and LHN know that Directv isn't going anywhere and they aren't going to be losing massive viewers.

Fans are the loser. I just left DTV. Too much money for football. Why they can't take the MLB model and let people stream.

Yes, it's this and, arguably more importantly, all of the high-priced commercial subscriptions that DirecTV has because it has Sunday Ticket. Look at how many sports bars rely upon boosted business on NFL Sundays and they pretty much all buy DirecTV for the sole purpose of Sunday Ticket. DirecTV is the dominant provider to bars and restaurants almost entirely because it has the Sunday Ticket package.

Because MLB makes about 1/10 the money from their service as the NFL does for its.

DirecTV to offer NFL Sunday Ticket streaming options

DirecTV announced on its website the introduction of NFLSundayTicket.tv, which allows subscribers to stream live, out-of-market games without requiring a dish. Fans can stream the contests on laptops, tablets, smartphones or using a gaming console.

Packages range from $199.99 for laptop, computer and phone services (with a student discount available) to $329.99 for the full package on all compatible devices and gaming consoles, including DirecTV's Red Zone Channel and new Fantasy Zone channel.

Got that since my Condo Complex really doesn't allow Satellite...I qualified with them....04-cheers

RE: OT: NFL/DirecTV on verge of $1.4 Billion deal with Sunday Ticket...
To me, the biggest threat to the long-term profitability of Sunday Ticket is that its own creation of the Red Zone Channel is cannibalizing interest. The Red Zone Channel is so well-produced that it can make having the full Sunday Ticket slate superfluous. Now, if you're a transplanted fan outside of your favorite team's home market, you still have a large incentive to buy Sunday Ticket. That's going to end up being the package's sweet spot going forward. However, Sunday Ticket will end up losing more of the general interest NFL fans that aren't specifically looking for a full schedule of a favorite out-of-market team (i.e. someone that wants to follow out-of-market NFL games in general for fantasy football purposes as opposed to a Steelers fan in Florida or a Bears fan in Arizona) - the Red Zone Channel is a very legitimate and addictive alternative to it.

The NFL's self-created problem might be that the Red Zone Channel is *too* good for the price - if you have access to it on a $10-or-so per month sports pack, it's almost a no-brainer during football season. For as much people love it, the NFL could probably get much more money by selling the RZC as a premium channel directly a la HBO or straight up sell it as a basic cable channel and collect subscriber fees from everyone. (Roger Goodell is almost certainly thinking the same thing, so I wouldn't be surprised if the "free ride" will be over when the current RZC subscription deals are up for renewal.)

It's a problem for DirecTV, too, once fans realize that they can get RedZone from other cable/satellite carriers. RedZone is so good that you not only don't "need" Sunday Ticket, it's more enjoyable to watch than Sunday Ticket.

RedZone is like a TV golf telecast, where the telecast constantly switches from one golfer to another in order to show the viewer as many important/interesting shots as possible. Sunday Ticket is like having one channel devoted to each golfer's round and you have to keep changing channels to see how any of the other golfers are doing.

I wonder if DirecTV may have even required something like that. Because RedZone is like Sunday Ticket with someone who is EXCELLENT at working the remote.

I dropped DirecTV over the winter. I was only with them because of Sunday Ticket.

Seems that there is a "free" stream of every game on the net and I got tired of paying for it.

I have Dish and am verrrry happy with the Redzone, especially with the cost, under 20.00 dollars and includes the college conference networks to boot. I am sure the NFL Sunday package sells subscriptions for DTV, but at a cost that will be passed on to their customers , will that last.

It has for 20 years. And their subscriber numbers keep going up.. Unless you are a new customer, you pay for it separately anyway, so the cost is not passed down to non-subscribers very much. They do offer promotions to get people to sign up, but by and large save for those who try to cheat the system by cancelling and signing up again under a different name, people pay for it separately.
