Ugly fans to visitors.
I truly say that I have been to a lot of away games. The worst fans to visitors that I have experienced were at the University of kentucky and West Virginia. What has your experience been?

No contest, WVU. I've been there as part of a team, as a Pitt fan, and as a neutral observer during non-Pitt games.

I do believe the safety issues are one of the reasons Pitt is in no rush to reschedule them, even despite public pleas from their side and the guarantee sell-outs that it would produce.

Horrible fans (violence and threats): NC State and WVU

Mouthy fans (cussing): GT, ECU, and UVA

Arrogant fans: UNC

Hardly knew they were there: Wake and Duke

Hospitable fans: Pitt and FSU

Haven't had the opportunity to go to Clemson, Cuse, BC, nor Miami for a UM game.

I have been to North Carolina. Their fans are OK, but are really full of their self. I'm retired now, I plan on going to each ACC school at least once, God willing. 04-cheers

Haven't had the opportunity to go to Clemson, Cuse, BC, nor Miami for a UM game.

VT fans are also hospitable. Tailgated and went to a game for the first time there this past year. Even went to student bars the night before. Had a great experience.

Been to NCSU once. Really didn't have any problems. Their student tailgating lot seemed like it could get out of control there and you pretty much have to walk through it to get to the stadium (at least from where we were parked). But no issues when we were there.

Most of Duke seemed to not know there was a game on, which was confirmed by some overheard questions that one student asked to a cheerleader on a campus bus after the game. Granted, that was one of the first games of last season so they didn't know how it was going to turn out.

At the ACC tournament this past March, no doubt that UNC fans seemed among the most arrogant. I've been to a football game at UNC years ago, and nothing particular really stood out about the fans then.

Most hospital away game I've ever been to: Texas A&M.... and I attended Yell practice and for the game sat in the A&M student section in full blown (and overly annoying) Pitt regalia.

UGAg and WVU are in a different league.

From my personal experiences .... UTEP fans at the Sun Bowl are outstanding. Clemson football fans were pretty good. Duke football fans were pretty good. Clemson basketball fans are OK. Notre Dame football fans are OK but full of themselves. Utah football fans are OK. VT football fans were very bad. Iowa fans were approaching UGAg/WVU level. UGAg and WVU fans could make you consider the Ferguson, MO PD as insufficiently armed and brutal.

I don't think I've ever seen a fanbase as inhospitable as the WVU fans in Morgantown.

Runner up would have to be South Florida fans. My buddy's car had all four tires slashed last time we went to a game there. I had people throw trash at me and one of my buddies got spat on, completely unprovoked I might add. I had terrible experiences in Tampa for those games.

Been to USF...for one game where it was a half empty stadium so maybe it wasn't indicative of a wound up crowd...but I had no problem there.

I don't know about UTEP fans themselves, but the Sun Bowl and the people in El Paso were great. One of the best run mid-tier bowls, IMO.

RE: WVU - Mountaineer fans seem to have this strange Napoleon complex which manifests itself by assaulting visitors with beer bottles, batteries, etc.

RE: Clemson - been to many games there (not just vs. VT but also vs. GT and BC). Tiger fans are friendly and generally easy-going, though they can be sore losers and love to blame the ACC for every loss. If only they were in the SEC, Clemson would've won multiple national championships by now... no reason not to visit though.

Without any question the worst fans in the entire college football world are those of West Virginia University.

Unclean, Nasty, Vulgar, Disrespectful, Foul-mouthed, Drunk, Inhospitable, and thoroughly unlikable in all respects.

WVU fans win this one hands down. Although, the Utah fans were astoundingly nasty when we played them in the 2005 Fiesta Bowl. Their venom really caught me by surprise.

Haven't had the opportunity to go to Clemson, Cuse, BC, nor Miami for a UM game.

Other than a bizarre shooting that occurred in a far away lot about 10 years, there is no violence and threats at Carter Finley Stadium. That entire affair was the result of a kid with mental problem crashing the game, starting a fight, then going home to get his brother who came back to the lot with a gun and started shooting.

There's been a great deal more violence at VT, IIRC. Not that we really need to go into detail and by the way, I was there the week it happened. I was also there when the guy shot himself on campus a couple of years ago.

NC State, Clemson, and VT are very friendly to opposing fans unless the opposing fans are mouthy ECU, South Carolina, or UVa fans, even then, the worst that happens is nothing like MD, or West Va.

You as a VT grad should know very well that some things are beyond your control. Just like the idiot who walked through Chapel Hill toward UNC's campus shooting several years ago.

Having been to 20 or so venues, many several times - nothing touches West Va, and MD is a close second from a college standpoint.

Hands down the most friendly is Navy.

Duke, WF, UNC, GT, and BC are as mild a location as you can possibly imagine because it's not a life and death matter for the fans.

VT, Clemson, Penn State, Georgia and NC State are extraordinarily similar - in part because they are cow-colleges and because the tailgate affair is almost as important as the game. While all are friendly, the friendly scale runs south to north - UGA, Clemson, NCSU, VT, PSU - but that's with a southern cultural bias.

FSU - very arrogant - but they have earned their arrogance.
Va - very arrogant - but of the intellectual sort
LSU - an odd arrogance - as if you have been invited to a show they they think you can not understand - but fun
ECU - big chip on the should - be careful what you say - but not really violent
SC - An unpleasant venue
MD - An even more unplerasent venue where D sized batteries are the weapon of choice
WVA - Damn, just damn

I've not been to Louisville's new stadium since they left the old baseball field. So I can't say.

I would not take a child to a WVa, SC or MD for a night game. ECU fans will not insult children. Good for them.

Well I had a horrible experience at NC State and would never give them another dime. Can't say enough horrible things about how the crowd treated us. WVU and NC State are the only places I've seen it taken to the level of throwing punches. The campus police were the most unprofessional group I've ever seen (well, next to the WV state police).

I believe that they said something to the effect of: "If you want someone to hear your side of the story you should write the paper in Blackburg. Nobody here cares." That was very similar to the WV State police woman that told my friend "If you wanted to stay safe you should have stayed in Blacksburg."

Are you refereing to the Gale Force Nazis owned by the Carolina Hurricanes, Campus Police, or the Highway Patrol. You should not have been interacting with Campus Police - did this happen in a satellite parking lot, inside the stadium, or inside the main gate - there are competing policing jurisdictions at the site - the State, the City, the University, and the private Gale Force Nazis - the GFN are rough - I'll give you that, but that's one thing that NC State's administration has been working to correct, the prior administration allowed those folks to get out of control.

I suspect that you attended the NC State in 2005, which was one year after the morons shot up the satellite parking lot in 2004. If that was the case, you are lucky you were not cuffed and tossed in the Wake County Jail as the policing atmosphere at the Stadium was jacked way over the top for the better part of a decade.

As to fighting in Carter-Finley - a close game with ECU will result in fisticuffs and car damage in the lots every time. A non close game does not result in problems - and the problem only occurs with ECU because it's akin to a sibling type issue. The same problem you have with WVa.

I had to cold-**** a pot head in BB&T years ago when he kept pawing my daughter - who'd have believed a Deacon would be like that. He was so stoned that we worried he would fall over the deck. Finally he touched my little girl once to often and I popped him - the WF fans vouched for me and they hauled him to drunk tank.

However, all this being said, I have seen a pro-football game in Philly, therefore I have seen the heart of darkness and stood on the ice at the center of the 9th circle of Hell. I've never been scared like that before and I have interacted with guys with automatic weapons on the streets of Tampa and in Newark - but the Eagles fans - wow, that's who you need to fight ISIS.

RE: Ugly fans to visitors.
You should go to a Philadelphia Flyers game. The Flyers fans are the lunatic fringe of the Philadelphia Eagles' fan base. They think an integral part of attending a professional hockey game is getting into a fight themselves. And if you are wearing Pittsburgh Penguins regalia, to many of them that is tantamount to a personal insult, so you need to be prepared to fight.

I am pretty big guy and I don't get challenged to too many fights. Also, I believe in sports etiquette and just as I wouldn't act like a douche in a stranger's home, I don't act like a jerk in someone else's stadium. More often than not, I don't say more than a handful of words during the entire game out of respect for the hosts. However, when I go to Philadelphia wearing a Pens jacket or T-shirt, I get challenged to a fist fight every single time.

Every. Single. Time.

Philly sports fans are the absolute worst anywhere. However, the WVU lunatics certainly give them a run for their money and that is saying a mouthful.

I have a one-year-old little boy at home and I will not take him to a game in Morgantown or Philadelphia until he is at least 12-14 years-old. Bringing him to either one of those hellholes any earlier than that would be horrendous parenting on my part because it absolutely could put him in harm's way - which is patently absurd.
