Remaining Undefeated Teams (Pre-season)
This is the thread for people who love lists 04-cheers For anyone new, basically what I’ll do is each week post the teams with their 1st loss and the remaining undefeated teams. As the season progresses, I’ll add in 1 loss teams and winless teams and note the games between the teams or ones with more upset potential.

Note (updated): This list is only of full I-A (FBS) teams and teams in transition to I-A status. Old Dominion (Conference USA), Appalachian State (Sunbelt), and Georgia Southern (Sunbelt) are transitioning into I-A, but playing pretty much full I-A schedules so are included.

Conference changes: This year we see some realignment again. We see Maryland leave the ACC and Rutgers the American for the Big Ten (now at 14 members). We see Louisville join the ACC from the American as a replacement. We see the American adding East Carolina, Tulane, and Tulsa from Conference USA to get up to 11 (12 next year with Navy). Conference USA is replacing them with Western Kentucky from the Sunbelt which puts them at 13 this year again after a year at 14 (which they’ll soon be back to). The Sunbelt meanwhile gains the last two football orphans from the WAC in New Mexico State and Idaho (last year both played as independents). It also gains Georgia State which last year played a conference schedule, but was in transition to I-A and Georgia Southern and Appalachian State which are in transition themselves this year.

Remaining Undefeated Teams: ACC: 14, American Athletic: 11, Big 12: 10, Big Ten: 14, Conference USA: 13, MAC: 13, Mountain West: 12, PAC-12: 12, SEC: 14, Sun Belt: 11, independents: 4, total: 128

This is incorrect. Appy, real GSU and ODU aren't bowl eligible.

ODU can fill a C-USA bowl if there aren't enough bowl eligible C-USA teams.

A colleague of mine is a big supporter ($$$) of ASU and I thought he said they were this year. I must have heard him wrong or maybe he was mistaken, which the later would surprise me.

RE: Remaining Undefeated Teams (Pre-season)
Those 3 are in transition. Do you guys think I should include them anyway?

I don't really have any objection to it anymore. The main reasons I didn't include were a) the original list I used had only full members so I have stuck with that out of tradition and b) once and awhile you get teams in transition with like half their schedule against I-AA teams. We would have had this list include one move up team for quite awhile a year or two ago, but it would have without them playing much I-A football. Looking at the schedules this year though that's not a huge issue.

I think you should. They are all playing full FBS schedules and a full slate of conference games. None are doing the hybrid schedule ODU did last year where they face 8 FCS' and played only 4 FBS games...well technically 3.8 in their case.

Southern.

I second this. Georgia Southern is going to do well for themselves.

I think NCAA-wide. A CUSA bowl would have to take a bowl-eligible MAC or SBC team before ODU.

Remaining Undefeated Teams (Pre-season)
My question is whether they are access bowl eligible if they run the table.

They shouldn't be. I'm pretty sure that teams in transition are only eligible if there are not enough not bowl eligible teams for all the bowls. Even that I think is a change and was only made because the NCAA decided that was better than putting a 5-7 team in a bowl.

exactly. The only way ODU, App St, and Ga Southern go bowling this year is if there aren't enough teams bowl eligible in FBS. Not if their conference doesn't have enough teams bowl eligible.

Well ODU is in our conference and fully eligible for the conference title.

UTSA was transitional (and unbeaten, but mostly against 1-AAs) when we played them OOC a couple years back. Last year, as full conference members (but still transitional) they almost won their division and went 8-4 against a full FBS schedule.

Anyway, I'd like to see these three on the list, despite their eligibility restrictions. (for example, same treatment you'd give a major program on post-season probation)

I'll add them. This was never meant as a point of contention. Just for the record though it wasn't out of post season reasons and more to do with a) first year I had one of these lists I just copied a list of every I-A team and the list didn't include move ups and b) I've noticed a few years with move ups playing close to half their schedule vs. 1-AA teams and that's an extra layer I tried to avoid.

RE: Remaining Undefeated Teams (Pre-season)
If history is any indicator, about 75% of the FBS will have a loss by the end of the third week. Last year, 90 schools had lost by then, and the previous year it was 93. So the list gets manageable pretty quickly.

In fact, in 2012 there was only one conference with an unbeaten team going into Week 13 (the B1G, with Ohio State). In 2013 by contrast, there were six (Big 12, SEC, MWC, MAC, B1G and ACC). Five of those were knocked out over the next three weeks, with only FSU left standing.
