UNT the Stanford of Conference USA...
According to this Fox Sports article.... McCarney is referring to UNT as "the Stanford of Conference USA". Not quite the meaning we would have interpreted.

Found under the "Lastly" section of the article: http://www.foxsports.com/college-footbal...-am-082014

"* North Texas is being called the “Stanford of Conference USA.” At least that’s what the coach of North Texas says."

And the original Dallas Morning News article:

For those who are too lazy to open the DMN link, like I usually am...

You can count the teams that play that old-school brand of football in today’s college game on a couple of hands. North Texas can be found in those hands.

“People have called us the Stanford of Conference USA,” North Texas coach Dan McCarney said. “That’s a hell of a compliment. They run the football. They’re smart when they do throw it. They play real good defense, special teams are outstanding and you try to dominate the turnover margin.

“If that’s old school, that’s old school. That’s how we try and play. That’s how we won. That’s the formula I’ve talked about and sold to this team since I took the job. Some days it looks better than others. Some days it works better than others. But that’s what I want.”

********************************************************

Certainly not what I was thinking when I saw the thread title.

And that could have been an apt description of us last year, as well. Ran the ball well...good defense...excellent special teams.

Right, which is why I always tell people I didn't go to school just anywhere, but to no less than the UNT of Conference USA!

Let's see how their running game does against UT. BYU ran all over the longhorns last year...I still think we should have beat them last year.

And, I was too lazy to copy the text. Links were easier for me. :-) The Fox Sports lead was what misled me too...
