With the news about Kedren's conditioning, Pookie has a leg up on him. Apparently, Pookie ran the offense extremely well in Canada too.

I thought he was very poised and mostly under control. At this point he doesn't have great vision with the ball, but I think that will improve. I also think that Shaq was the only player who really gave him any options on offense. The spacing was bad and Iverson, King and Hawkins were rarely in position down low to command the ball.

He will give us an element that we had with Turner, Garner, Burks and Rose. He will be able to singlehandedly beat the press and make our opponents pay. He has a great handle.

He reminds me a lot of Burks, sans Burks' physicality (although it may come).

I've been trying to figure out who he reminds me of for the last week and I still can't come up with anyone. He doesn't have Burks's aggressiveness yet. His outside shot is 100 X better than Burks' was when he arrived, but not as good as when he left. Here is the best I could come up with...

Handle - Garner
Crossover - Garner
Open Court - Garner
Outside shot - Antonio Barton
Range on outside shot - Jeremy Hunt (I know he's wasn't a point guard)
Speed - DWash
Passing - A little better than DWash
Defense - DWash

I'm not saying that he is better or worse than the above; but I think his style is comparable.

He reminds me of a better Shyrone Chatman.

I say that having really liked how Chatman played his senior year.

He seems more coordinated and to have a better instinct though.

Better scorer as well.

Chatman's senior year he averaged 9 points 4 assists 3 rebs and shot 40% from 3, 41% overall and 73% FT.

Led the league in assist turnover ratio.

I like the competition for Pookie and Magee either way.

Would nice to see Pookie or Magee break out and take the starting PG job. Then have have the vets like Johnson as our subs.

RE: Kedren Johnson to Memphis
I like Pookie and Magee a lot but dang some of you need to temper expectations for two freshman, one of whom was ranked in the 70s and the other in the 90s. I think they both have a nice future, but there is no way either is ready to come and take a starting position away from a player who lead an SEC team in both scoring and assists his last season. That would be akin to having expected Pookie to take JJ's starting spot last year. Unless Kendren has seriously digressed, I cannot see anyway he is not the starter, especially once he is back in game shape.

18 lbs isn't anything to a 20 year old. I'm just sayin', Pook's at fighting weight right now and already has some practices under his belt. May not be such a one sided decision when we get to November.

RE: Kedren Johnson to Memphis
The way KJ attacks the rim is very impressive....incredible actually. There have been comparisons of past Memphis guards....I would have to say say (as I just thought about this) he reminds me more of CDR as the comparison to Memphis guards. And , I know that CDR was a forward!

Most interestingly though, I also see A lot of Tony Parker and Ganobli in KJ's game.....usually guards of his size don't resort to a floater type of game. But the fact that he has this at his arsenal @ 6'4" is incredibly impressive.....Also has a knack for the basket and you can see this by his ability to stretch and reach the hoop from incredible distances. This may not make sense to some, but he knows where the basket is and knows how to finish, with layups, as they are the most important basket in the game.

KJ is a difference maker, and if he is prepared mentally. He is going to lead these youngsters in a brand and style of basketball that will be very tough to matchup with by the opponent and extremely exciting for us rabid fans to watch.... get your popcorn ready...it's about to get very interesting....as a matter-of-fact, already has for me! 03-cloud9

RE: Kedren Johnson to Memphis
I think Pookie will be a very good player in time, but I really don't see anyway he starts over Johnson. Johnson was the best player on a decent SEC team the last time he played. It's rare that a freshmen who was ranked in the 90s is better than that right out of the gate. Pookie is probably better suited to come off the bench anyways right now. He will get the opportunity to learn from a veteran guy, while also getting plenty of minutes to develop.

That Vandy squad was 16-17, let's not rewrite history and start calling them decent. Kedren was the bright spot, however.

Kedren's last season with them, yes.

Chatman was playing out of position and got the most out of his talent by taking care of the ball and playing under control. He was overmatched against quicker point guards, and he was also a lot taller than Pookie. I don't see many similarities between them. If Pookie can put up the same numbers, that would be a good comparison at the end of the season.

I'm pretty sure that Magee won't be in the mix for more than 10 minutes per game. His handle, court vision and outside shooting aren't quite good enough yet. He does have a great first step and drives the ball very well. He will be a very good player eventually.

Unless its a win and then the board will be strangely muted for the most part
