Hawaii's AD is threatening his Board of Regents with the "very real possibility" of dropping football. It may just be political positioning, but the program nonetheless faces serious challenges. Travel costs must be a burden, and they haven't been drawing fans as well lately.

At least Rice gets its home game against Hawaii first, but I wonder if Rice ever actually makes the return trip?

This could affect the broader landscape of college football. If non-P5 programs start shutting down due to high costs, will NCAA administrators listen? I wouldn't expect too much sympathy from the P5 schools, but it is in their interest to be able to schedule OOC games against programs like Hawaii.

Risky move if this is posturing - can't imagine how this doesn't negatively impact recruiting.

The paper today says no programs to be cut, and that the Univ Pres says it is not realistic to expect athletics to break even. Extremely unlikely football dropped anytime soon. Who knows what will happen if the P5 go to paying stipends, and the others, all swimming in red ink already, feel obligated to follow.
