NBR: Hawaii AD: 'Very real possibility' football program shuts down
http://www.sbnation.com/college-football...-financial

Hawaii is trying to create there own Black friday. Very stupid thing for the AD to say.

Quote:The University of Hawaii's football program may shut down as a result of tough financial conditions, athletic director Ben Jay said at a Board of Regents meeting Monday afternoon.

Well, it's not like they can take a bus to road games.

Nor is it cheap for any team to go visit, even if it is every other year or even every 4th year.

The Tide may subsidize them just so they have a nice place to go in the years they are on probation and can't go to a bowl game

The NCAA banned that practice after USC and UAT both did it. Teams on probation can no longer add an extra game at an exempted location (Hawaii).

Well they won't be governed by the NCAA soon.

So they'll never be on probation.

Are the currently governed by them? Sure doesn't seem like it.

Even before the travel cost increases, U of H was complaining that they were having difficulty scheduling stateside OOC games -- many schools wanted the recruiting boost of playing on the islands but didn't want to have the home games (SOS concerns?). If Hawai'i pulls the plug, they may only be among the first nonBCS schools to do so. With the current fuss over such things as medical issues and the growing "cost of attendance" issue perhaps added on, they may just be the vanguard of the end of collegiate football as we oldtimers knew it.

Some of us think that schools that stretch us in the other direction may be the cause of this.
