Hawaii AD says Warriors football could be 'going away'
Quote:Hawaii athletics director Ben Jay painted a grim picture for the future of his football program while speaking to the university’s Board of Regents on Monday afternoon.
"There's a very real possibility of football going away," Jay reportedly told the Board.
Hawaii is currently facing a $2.1 million budget deficit this year and has worked under a budget deficit during 11 of the past 13 years.
And the football program isn’t helping.
Because the program has not had a winning season since 2010 and has won just four games in the past two seasons, interest is down. By the end of July, Hawaii had sold just 15,568 season tickets for the team’s seven-game home schedule. Hawaii has sold at least 18,000 season tickets every year since the 1970s.
Last year, it sold just 18,354 season tickets.
Even when the team posted an undefeated regular season and played in the Sugar Bowl, season ticket sales for the following year only swelled to 27,700 in 2008.
Aloha Stadium seats 50,000.

If this came to pass, would the MWC look to C-USA's UTEP as a potential add to replace Hawaii? Would UTEP be interested?

It is very likely that UTEP replaces them. That'd make sense to me. Now guess who would be the #1 choice for CUSA? That would be your beloved Ragin Cajuns. It is the most likely outcome. You should probably take it easy with all the anti-CUSA propaganda. The Cajuns might be playing in CUSA sooner than you think. It is not a matter of if, but when.

Nope, not in the least.
As has been commented elswhere, the AD may be just trying to drum up support for increased season ticket sales, but if he is, it's a hell of a bad way to do it IMHO. Think of the possible negative impact on potential recruits....and how Hawaii's opponents will use his comments against the school in the recruiting battles.

Look at a map of the US and it certainly seems that from a geographical standpoint the MWC is a better fit. Having said that, as one poster pointed out, as a member of C-USA, UTEP has a presence in San Antonio, Dallas, and Houston where some of their alumni most surely reside. I can certainly see the advantage there.

the MWC brings in 4 million more per year and splits it by fewer teams
and with the exception of Rice the MWC easily has better universities

UTEP had a presence in Houston and Dallas for years, but UTEP would almost certainly jump to the MWC because they were in the WAC with a lot of those MWC schools. There was an ESPN article on the subject last year and it was pretty clear that the UTEP administration would go to the MWC. In all honesty I never understood why the MWC would want Hawaii as football only member when they could have had UTEP as a full member and on top of that UTEP fits the geography and culture of the MWC more so than they do the culture of CUSA. I hope it happens, because UTEP should be in a conference with their natural rivals.

IMO, the big money backers are old, really old. They have memories of our time in the WAC with many of the MWC schools. Also, it makes a lot if sense to be in a conference with UNM. We have history with CSU, Wyoming, FSU, and AFA. We had a budding rivalry with Nevada. UNLV and BSU would be great draws. It just makes a lot of sense. I'm excited about CUSA 3.1 but I think the MWC would be a better fit.

An Andy Katz article from ESPN last year, where inside sources at the MWC and UTEP supposedly made some statements about it.
