RE: MAC and ESPN sign 13 year deal
I congratulate the MAC on a new contract, but if the new contract means the MAC will get even more of their games pushed over to ESPN3, I think they need to walk away and shop their games to another network. To ESPN G5 games are nothing more than filler content. They pay peanuts, and stick most of them on ESPN3. In my opinion, the few games that do air on ESPN or ESPN2 are not worth watching so much of the season held captive to ESPN3.

would this new contract give UMass second thoughts about joining as a full member, or has that ship already sailed?

Already sailed. Besides they would have already known rough terms before their decision.

Good point. Makes you wonder then it's under AAC money and they preferred to hold out for a chance at that league. Also makes you wonder if the GOR is part of the deal.

Yes.

But lets be realistic, how many MAC schools have a legitimate shot at joining a new conference with a significantly higher TV payout? The one advantage for the MAC is that it has the best cultural fit of any G5 conference that only the MWC is comparable to. I can see the MAC presidents happy as a midwest based conference and be willing to sign a GOR to make the MAC stronger and more stable.

Thank You for providing common sense.

No, UMass did not know the terms, they were still in flux earlier this summer.

I know UMass said no before, but the contract is now out there and they have not left the MAC in football... yet. They may yet reconsider.

I agree in bold. If that means all of the games are going to be online only for the most part(excluding the Mid-Week Games), Pass on that deal.

Or ESPN is really serious about having a network on Roku players? Or If the deal is anywhere near 2mil per team per year, do that mean the MAC has all Mid-Week games(regardless of the sport) exclusive and lock all other Conferences out?

I have been telling my Marshall friends (yes, I know I have to pick my friends more carefully, lol) since the C-USA became Sun Belt 2.0 that Marshall needs to move back to the MAC. It is CRAZY to me that Marshall is spending all of that money on travel for a pittance, and the competition is NOT what it was when they first joined. Much different situation than WVU in the Big 12.

That makes about as much sense as WV moving to the American.03-drunk

You pass on a deal only if (a) there are better deals to be had, or (b) the deal is worse than having no deal at all.

I doubt that MAC would have signed this deal if either (a) or (b) were true.

RE: MAC and ESPN sign 13 year deal
I believe AAC contract is for 6 years. So I would not be surprised if the MAC may end up getting more per team than the AAC. I believe the AAC goal is to draw a larger contract in 6 years that would end up still making far more money with a larger deal in 6 years. I think both conferences made the right decision for themselves. MAC took the bird in hand. AAC is figuring they are good enough hunters to get the birds in the bush.

Very apparent that ESPN is looking to lock in every watchable game out there to fill ESPN3. Think this reinforces my belief they want ESPN3 to be the Netflix of sports. Where you go to see "a game" while the other channels are where you go to see "the" game.

New MAC 13-year deal w/ESPN worth over $100M, about $8M/year industry sources told @ESPN #MACtion

This breaks down to ~$660k per team/year.

$666,666 for a 12 team conference. Sold their soul ESPN to have their games mostly on ESPN3?

So they are ahead of the Sun Belt? I could see that. I doubted they would be ahead of the MWC or even CUSA.

If this includes a GoR that's a interesting deal. It may easily explain why UMass had no interest in moving their basketball program to the MAC...I think the A-10 gets like 600K in their TV deal already.
