32 years ago when the ACC laid an egg on opening weekend. 03-weeping

Clemson and UNC both laid eggs against Georgia (Hershel Walker with busted thumb) and Pitt (with Marino) - games that both teams should have won, when both CU and UNC were ranked in the top 10, IIRC. Carolina kicked to fg's and Clemson scored one touchdown and led at the half.

I lost $300 that weekend. 05-mafia

IIRC it was Pitt 7 UNC 6 and UGA 13, Clemson 7. Ruined the entire year for the conference.

This is a thread for past disappointments such as when Penn State stole NC State's 1979 Gator Bowl spot with a 54 yd field goal kicked into a howling 45 mph wind with no time on the clock. We lost 9-7.

Or like number one UVa's choke to GT in 1990.

The reason there was enough time on the clock to allow the field goal attempt was because the NC State clock operator was too quick on the trigger. A pass was thrown out of bounds (there was no spike rule in effect at the time) and the clock was stopped while the ball was still in the air. That let PSU kick that long FG. I think it wasn't even their starting kicker IIRC.

Disappointment is not a strong enough word to describe that.

I remember exactly where I was when that happened -- in the kitchen of my childhood home, listening to that game on the radio, and I remember being heartbroken when the Wolfpack play-by-play guy said "good".

That one was fun to watch.

This entry produced at least 2 layers of ACC-related disappointment:

January 1, 1992 -- Atlanta, GA.

ECU - 37
NC State - 34

Immediate disappointment was that State choked a 17-point 4th quarter lead.

The secondary disappointment was that this game led to the following announcement about a week (or so) later:

"Georgia Tech has agreed to hire East Carolina head coach, **** ***** as its new head coach, succeeding Bobby Ross"

The only State/Carolina game of any sort that I saw in person was the 1990 football game at Kenan. One of the most boring football games I ever witnessed that ended with Damon Hartman's 56-yard FG.

We were there too. I've never seen so many people leave a game in the 4th with the score tied 6-6. Both sides convinced they would lose.

It was a horror of a game.

The funniest game I ever saw in Kenan was WF beat UNC in the rain in 88 or 89. A super ram took drunk behind us and his own wife had an usher take him away. The palpable frustration was worse than the time that Bill Dooley's players threw the UNC/Miami of Ohio game the year after Crum took the job.

I also remember when the ref (think it was Jim Knight) fell dead on the field and someone from behind UNC's bench lept the bench and was on top of the ref and did active CPR and did not stop even as Knight was being gurnied up to go over to Memorial.

If you are going to have a heart attack - Kenan or Wallace Wade is the place. Baptist is about 10 minutes away from WF.

9/5/98

Boston College 41 ... Georgia Tech 31

Deplorable defense, and a catastrophic 4th quarter.

You are correct. That game was played at Three Rivers Stadium and was my first football game as a Freshman at Pitt. It was a portent of things to come under Coach Fazio.

RE: 32 years ago in the ACC.
In the early 80's ACC football consisted of
* Clemson with a top-5 defense, power running game, great receivers but a running QB
* UNC with some great players (e.g. Lawrence Taylor) but never "getting over the hump"
* Maryland - capable of beating anyone but usually would lose just enough
* NC State - solid program under Dick Sheridan
* Wake, Duke and UVa - all dreadfully bad

When Ga Tech joined they were in the mix for the top spot right away.
When UVa hired George Welsh and Duke hired Steve Spurrier, they both developed into dangerous offensive teams; that's also about the time that UNC went into the tank, IIRC.

The 2 catastrophic VT games that I went to where Tech lost were the UVA game in 1998. Where VT had a 22 point lead at half time and let Aaron Brooks come back and beat us and the 1997? game vs. Temple where VT was favored by 41 and managed to lose. (3rd worse loss against the spread in history at the time)
