Ben Curtis FedEx Cup Watch
Ben is currently ranked 131st in the FedEx Cup Standings and only the top 125 move onto the playoffs and get a full exemption to all Tour Events next year!

This week's PGA Tournament is the Wyndham Championship in Greensboro, NC and after Round 1 Ben was he was tied for 36th place at -2 under and today he has moved up the leader board to T12th at -5 under with four birdies and a bogey on his card and three holes left! He certainly needs a Top 10 to have a shot to make the playoffs.

He T6th at The Memorial this year and T12th at the RBC Canadian a few weeks ago.....his best Tour finishes this season.

Let's Go Ben, Let's Go Ben!

Not a good third round for Ben who shot a +3 over and dropped 31 spots to a T59th place at -2 under par. Hoping for a solid round tomorrow.....it can be done......just watched 50 year old Champions Tour rookie Kevin Sutherland shoot the senior circuits first-ever 59. He missed the 18th fairway and a seven foot put that would have given him a 58! He was -9 under after the first 8 holes.....unreal!

Well, that 3rd round 73 really hurt Ben but I think that his chances to make the FedEx playoffs were impaired with his season results even though he still had a shot this weekend.

Ben ended T47th at -5 moving up 12 spots with this -3 under final round. For the Wyndham Championship he shot rounds of 68-67-73-67 and his final projected FedEx ranking is 131. Only the top 125 advance and earn full Tour exemptions for next season.

It's a shame, because twice in the spring, he had one crap round that pushed him way down the board and instead of finishing 30th and picking up 40 FedEx Points, he finished 70th and picked up 1. That's the difference right now.

I guess he will play the Web.com championship series and try to get the card back that way.

If he played more than 10x a year he would have his card.

this used to be a big problem with Ben but he has increased his total to 24 events this year (4 of those were in 2013 but count as 2014). Other than british open I don't think he got in any majors, world golf championship events or the players so those should be his weeks off. I didn't understand why he took of the Cromwell ct tourney as he did real well there in past? the 4 straight missed cuts in april-may mid tier events really doomed him.

I'm not real optimistic he can go the nationwide route to get his card back as that circuit is a birdie brigade and that's not his game! I hope for the best as he is a great ambassador for KSU.

He has 13.7M of official PGA tour $$ so I would assume he has enough to live their lifestyle.

From what I have heard Ben is not too concerned about losing his card. He is more interested in being there as his children grow up and feels that due to his British Open win he will be able to get into enough tournaments to make some money. He has been consistent with this throughout his career which is okay with me.

I was spitballing the number of tournaments he played in. Really had no clue the actual number. It is still a numbers game. If he wants his card he could play a few more weeks - or get a win!

Ben has done quite well form himself in his golf career (not to mention his endorsements on top of the 13.7MM) and is most certainly happy to spend more time with his kids. Even if he didn't finish in the top 125 this year he will still have "fully conditional" status next year which is how he got into the Valero 2 years ago and won. Basically you are "on call". Also, life on the road is a constant grind and you have to pace yourself and pick and choose which events to play so you don't wear yourself out before it's over (anyone remember Anthony Kim?). Remember he's not 28 anymore either. He's very happy to spend time with his family whenever he can, so missing a tournament here or there to see his kids comes without a second thought. Some events he's played in the past don't fit his game and those are the one's you leave off the calendar. He played more events than you see as at times he's playing overseas in addition to the 22-25 he plays here each year.

Since Ben didn't finish in the top 125, the next 75 on tour and the top 75 from the web.com tour played in the web.com finals, which is 4 tourneys and another 25 cards are given for PGA tour next year.

Ben has missed the cut in the first 3 tourneys and is 3 shots behind the cut entering round 2.

So things not looking promising on this route for a card so not sure where this puts him.

Well, he's not done quite yet, but if things don't work out, I think he is looking at a reduced schedule for PGA play (probably get some exceptions) and mixing in some play on the Web.com tour or the European Tour.

BTW, John Hahn finished the day T22nd in Wales. He's made 4 straight cuts, but really need a strong finish to get into the Top 110 on the money list (that's the magic number on the European Tour) so he can play most events next year. He's currently 119th in money.
