RE: OT Mandatory freshman housing
Lived in the Towers for 4 years. My own bedroom and bathroom with a full kitchen and spacious living room which my roommates and I furnished with nice furniture, a large flat screen TV, and even a ping pong table. My corner unit was right next door to the laundry room. Beautiful high-rise views of campus were hard to beat. On campus location directly across from the UCF Arena, Bright House Networks Stadium, Memory Mall for tailgating, Jay Bergman Field, and just a short walk to class. Downstairs we had about 10 restaurant options.
We were spoiled indeed. Although some would argue the $800+ a month could've been better spent, especially considering this did not include any food.
The inside was just as advertised. Never had any issues with my apartment the four years I lived in it and any time we needed a light bulb changed or wall painted, the work orders were responded to very quickly. Overall, I had a great experience at the Towers. Sorry, JHG. I know that goes against everything you want to believe but it's true. UCF Housing is very tough to beat.

I've toured FSU, UCF, USF and UF this summer with my daughter, and every campus has great NEW dorms. FSU's new dorms are very nice and IMO probably the best we saw all summer.

RE: OT Mandatory freshman housing
UF and FSU have dorms that were built in the late 1800s and early 1900s, with some extending into the 1960s. Some dorms don't even have air conditioning. FSU's dorms are so bad they're actually demolishing two entire communities (Deviney & Dorman) and rebuilding them from scratch. Sure the turn-of-the-century brick design gives them character but that's just about all they got going for them.
They do have their recently built Ragans Hall which is an apartment style dorm and that's probably about as close as they're going to get to any of UCF's dorms. The dorms they built in 2005 (also starts with a D, can't think of the name) are in Frenchtown which if you've been in Tallahassee enough, you know is one of the least desirable parts of town.
I'd love to see some pictures if you got any.

UCF's Plaza on University just opened its doors for the very first time this past week so I'm afraid you haven't seen all the dorms just yet.

RE: OT Mandatory freshman housing
I think having the freshmen stay on campus its a good idea and has proven to improve their participation in school activities and in graduating from college.
