'Carry the team and be the key player?' - unlikely
'Play his role and complement a team led by Shaq/Nichols?' - more likely

I think the first is a reach, and the second feels fine. But we will indeed see.

The first is not happening. The second is a reach. I'm luckily in a good spot where I get good info and was told to temper my expectations.

Many of us have insider info...and that info is still opinion that varies amongst those 'in the know'.

It's OK if you think you should temper your expectations, but some of us don't need our expectations tempered with rumors--just sayin.

This is true. I just know people that have seen him play. I'll leave it at that.

Many of us know someone who has seen him play....that's what I'm saying. Not a big deal, but opinions still vary.

Fit and mix matter too. Players play well with some players and some situations and poorly in others. Unless you are transcendent, context matters.

Not saying either position in correct, just an observation that chemistry / role / fit are important and tough to gauge in pickup.

Wherever the answer to this debate eventually ends, one thing is for certain: your starting PG had BETTER be a key player or you aren't going anywhere.

Concur, but 'a' key player and 'the' key player are different things.

Good post play can reduce the need for the PG to create shots, but the PG still has to be functional…

I'm high on Pookie's potential, but an established SEC starter would be an upgrade in the near term even in Pookie is all world down the road. Nothing but upside to add experienced talent...

I've watched Johnson play a lot for Vandy and he is very good. He will help this team immediately.

I don't think anyone expects Pookie to be the focal point on offense. And, it's definitely preferable to have experience in your back court. I think both Johnson and Pookie will play starter's minutes and whoever doesn't turn the ball over will run the offense.

http://espn.go.com/mens-college-basketba...en-johnson

Freshman:
14.5 minutes, 3.1 points, 1.8 assists, 1.2 rebounds, 1.2 turnovers

Sophomore:
31.7 minutes, 13.5 points, 3.6 assists, 3.5 rebounds, 2.8 turnovers

For comparison just looking at the numbers: Joe Jackson- sophomore year (Joe's freshman year was significantly stronger than Johnson's- and Joe's Junior year earned him conference player of the year).
26.9 minutes, 11.0 points, 3.9 assists, 2.2 rebounds, 2.4 turnovers

It looks like adding Johnson, basketball wise- would be a really really nice addition.

Vandy also plays slow and only average around 60 points a game.

It's that stupid court. They might run off the side if they got going too fast.
