What will Rashawn Rembert show us next? I ask because very few basketball players improve themselves like Rashawn has.
From a weak 3 point shooter (4-20 as a Freshman, with a shot that didn’t even look good) Rashawn has simply made himself one of the best 3 point shooters in the NCAA, and one of the best in ETSU history.
Only 2 returning NCAA D1 players made more 3’s than Rashawn’s 108 last year: Michael Frazier’s 118 and Tyler Harvey’s 109. http://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men...vidual/621
Only 5 returning NCAA D1 players exceeded his 3.09 per game average for made 3’s. http://www.ncaa.com/stats/basketball-men...vidual/144
Rashawn played 36.1 minutes of every game (tied for 24th in D1 for total minutes played), was the focus of every opponent’s defense and still, for the 3rd year in a row, improved scoring, shooting percentage, 3 point percentage, free throw shooting, rebounding, assists and steals.
Freshman year he was an offensive liability:
6.2 minutes; 1.4 ppg; .242 shooting; .200 from 3 (4-20); .444 from the line; 0.6 rebounds, 6 assists, 5 turnovers and 5 steals
Sophomore year he was better on offense:
27.5 minutes; 8.9 ppg; .396 shooting; .397 from 3 (58-146); .806 from the line; 2.3 rebounds; 44 assists; 54 turnovers and 27 steals
Junior year he was truly remarkable:
36.1 minutes; 16.8 ppg; .449 shooting; .425 from 3 (108-254); .842 from the line; 3.1 rebounds; 61 assists; 54 turnovers and 43 steals
In recent memory only Tommy Hubbard has shown this kind of sustained, all around improvement for the Bucs.
Rashawn shattered the record for total 3 pointers of Mr. Jennings and Courtney Pigram with 108, 10th in the NCAA last year, and 3rd among returning players. He is within reach of Pigram’s career record of 276 3 pointers with 170 despite a wasted freshman year where he made only 4. That is, of course, unless Lester Wilson does even better. Lester, with a far better first two years, already has 138 made three’s going into his Junior year.
Are there greater heights for Rashawn? Well, he made big strides on defense last year, boosting steals from 27 to 43 and looking good at times at the top of the 1-3-1, and could help us even more in that regard this year. Our guards will have less size (no KGG) but are very quick, and a scrappy defense will be one way to neutralize the height differential. Rashawn has continued to improve his handle, and his ability to get open off the dribble. And Rashawn’s flashed his athleticism on occasional drives to the hoop. That is a skill that he could exploit further as he will no doubt be overplayed even more for the long range shot. If he wants success on the next level, these are the kind of skills that could improve
They say Rashawn’s off court work ethic is unmatched. It will be fascinating to see what kind of senior year he might produce. He's carving himself out a spot as a Buc that we will long remember.
