Rhule Talks P.J. Walker and 2014 Expectations
http://www.bcsnn.com/aac/777-temple-owls...tions.html
Not exactly glowing reviews from Rhule so far, but I'm still excited to see Walker play again, I think he will turn into one of the better QBs in the league. Like I said in the comments section, I think by the end of his career at Temple, he is gonna turn into something really special for you guys.

RE: Rhule Talks P.J. Walker and 2014 Expectations
This will be an important season for Rhule and Temple football. I wasn’t a big supporter of the Rhule hiring, I thought Temple deserved a coach with some head coaching experience or a higher profile, but that being said while I don’t agree with some of his decisions I do support him 100%.
With all the media attention on the cutting of the 5 sports to free up more resources for the revenue producing sports, the whole on campus stadium debate and the negotiations revolving around the lease at Lincoln Financial Field Temple football needs to make a statement that they are moving in the right direction and are worthy of the investment and long term financial commitment needed to make Temple football recognizable on the national stage.
I feel like 6 and 6 with a trip to a bowl game would be considered a success and enough to quite the critics for a year. A five win season would feel like treading water, less than 5 wins and the Philadelphia media will have a field day with stories about how the money designated for football can and should be better spent else ware at a state funded public university.
If I can see it this way I’m sure Rhule and the board see it the same way, there is a lot riding on this season.

I'm not really sure what was wrong with what Coach Rhule said. You cant expect a QB to be perfect, which PJ certainly isn't. He's a true sophomore who has a long way to go. Doesn't mean he isn't good. Rhule is pretty conservative when it comes to handing out praise. After spending time with the Giants, he knows what our players need to do to reach the highest level.

Rhule is good about challenging of players, from a motivational psychology standpoint. He did the same thing with Tyler Mat....... last year.
But the criticisms of Walker feel a little off target when the coach may have flunked gamesmanship himself last year, along with the secondary (and the pass rush).

I watched several Temple games last year on TV and thought Temple had an unpolished gem in P.J. Walker. The guy was exciting to watch. Unfortunately, he didn't have many tools to work with. The offensive cupboard was bare. Hopefully, Rhule will recruit better players to compliment Walker.

Of course he was unpolished, he was a true freshman. He didn't have a ton of help at WR and TE other than Anderson. Now, he'll have a lot to work with in Colin Thompson, Keith Kirkwood, Matt Eaton, Derrek Thomas, Khalif Herbin, etc.

I think people are reading way too much into Rhules criticisms of Walker. Everyone, the players, coaching staff and Walker himself know that PJ is the starter and it take a major disaster to change that, however coaches walk a fine line between offering enough praise to build confidence without saying so many great things that a player gets complacent.
Part of Rhules job is to push and challenge his players to continue to get better, part of this is pointing out the things that can be done better, the areas opportunity for improvement. When you have a situation where the starting QB is set, like the case of PJ, you often hear coaches talking about the backs ups saying how they are doing such great things, they keep showing the staff more and more every day, etc. For the most part it’s all BS and the last thing the HC wants to see is his number 2 QB getting any meaningful playing time, but a big part of that is to push the #1 QB to stay hungry and take nothing for granted.

He had a few more tools last season then many people realized and this season it wont be about the receivers and RB’s it will hinge on how well the O line comes together to protect him. If the line can protect and open some holes Temple has more than enough playmakers.
Something most people don’t realize is that last season PJ was firmly #3 on the depth chart with every expectation of redshirting him to give him a chance to learn the system. PJ didn’t start taking any real meaningful reps with the first team offense until prior to game #5 vs. Louisville and then as a starter in game 6. I saw a couple of interviews with the OC and he made reference that they hadn’t gone halfway through the playbook with PJ last season and it will be good now that he had a full off season, spring practice and fall camp to get comfortable with the entire system.
