I was an SID for 15+ years, at an NAIA school with NO football and we did better than this. Something for Dr. K to work on.
You want to increase the fan base and the local media isn't helping??
PUMP UP THE VOLUME.
I agree that when something IS put out, it is of quality, but there just is not anywhere near enough of it. If the Chronicle wont print the releases, just put in online. Anything will help.

In Chuck's defense, he's got 16 different sports to cover, and that with a too-small staff and a shoestring budget, typical Rice deal. An SID traditionally has been a facilitator, rather than a producer, of the news. With Rice's situation, Chuck has to be both. And the extent of coverage on fall camp....that's DB's choice, certainly not the SID's. I assure you Chuck would love to have the local daily newspaper sports beat reporter generating frequent camp news and feature stories plus daily tweets. But between Coach Bailiff's penchant for minimal coverage and the Chronicle's, well, let's just say the Chronicle's approach, just not gonna happen. But don't blame the SID....

Can't answer for South Bend, but after a relatively mild Summer, Chicago is finally getting typical hot, humid August weather this week (and forecasted for next week), with almost daily rain showers. No, not quite Houston's heat and humidity levels, but close enough that you folks should feel right at home.

To be perfectly clear, I was not blaming Chuck personally, I was blaming the overall situation.

Well, the way to fix the lack of resources is to...get more resources. Dr. K has made it clear that has to be our #1 priority if we are to fight to stay relevant in D1 athletics.
And, just a personal note, Chuck works his a$$ off to produce great content with what little resources he has. We should be thankful to have a guy that cares as much as he does about Rice and works as hard as he does to make it the best place it can be.

RE: Fall Camp
I've worked with three SIDs at Rice, and I have never ceased to be amazed at how much each of them managed to do with resources that were consistently somewhere between meager and nonexistent. And probably leaning closer to nonexistent than meager most of the time. If there is one function in the entire department that has consistently outperformed reasonable expectations for 50 years, SID is it.
I have always thought it was a stupid idea to deprive that function of necessary resources. A succession of athletic directors have for the most part disagreed. I sincerely hope Dr. K changes this.

I agree with the positive comments about Chuck's work. My comments about MK were not meant in any way to disparage what Chuck does.

Resources? What resources does it take to make practices and the team more available to the media? What resources did it really take to employ MK? As referenced above, our current situation can be traced back to Bailiff's desire for "more privacy" (read: less accountability). Good for the coaches, bad for the program as a whole and the fans.

I've never gotten the impression Coach Bailiff doesn't like putting his young men in front of the media. They are great representatives of our university and he knows that.
I think if you look across the country, I think it is more common for practices to be closed. Yes, it isn't great for us as fans, but I can understand why coaches do it. And, I think we can hold the coaches plenty accountable by the performance of the team on game day.
And, MK took a salary didn't he? That would have been resources that could be used somewhere else. MK working directly for Rice was never going to work. We just need to get over it.

By the way, the absence of Matt Wofford has been lost in the Derek Brown saga. Anyone know about Matt Wofford?

I started this line of discussion and probably worded my initial statement a little too strongly. As I understand it, real-time tweeting during practices was more of a concern than anything else because it could lead to mis-information, particularly with things like injuries. I seem to remember hearing practices were closed for a while, but I have no idea if they were completely closed or just closed if journalists wouldn't agree to certain guidelines. I also don't know how long that "closure" remained. I do remember MK tweeting a bunch during practices and scrimmages one year. It was blessedly refreshing and informative, but also extremely short-lived. I can't even remember who employed MK at that particular time.
I agree that Coach Bailiff seems to like getting players in front of the cameras.

Yeah, I may have misspoke about Rice's protocol. I believe you are correct about their concerns.

Mock Game today at 2:30 for those interested. South Bend will feel like the arctic after today's
Arctic, indeed.
I know it's early yet, but there are several weather forecasts out there predicting 70-75 degrees at game time. And as much as a 70-80% chance of rain.

This is the current NWS point forecast: A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Partly sunny, with a high near 78.

anybody see this? any reports?
Bump
A mock game is a walk through where they roll out all the personnel combinations as they would in a game. It gives you an idea of who will be on the field and when they will be on the field. Anyways, there wasn't really anything new to note. I know one of the news channels was there filming a segment, when that did/will air, I don't know.
