I thought he was created after slavery ended and I never saw him with slaves. He was a bit stupid looking and was like a cross between col sanders and a yosemite sam. Don't know how anyone could be offended by such silliness.

This is beyond stupid. If ths students don't want to see a flag in the chapel then how about just staying out of the chapel? Lee's connection to the school is well documented and that association should be of no surprise to applicants.

I put the term Ole Miss as an honorific much like as when I and the crew of my ship referred the the Captain as the Old Man or the Old Lady. This is just the prelude before getting the school to change the Rebels moniker altogether.

Surprisingly, a lot of people don't know about this. One time this lady (ex-EP mayor) came into our station for a visit because we had attended to her aircraft emergency. She was married to an older man who had a boatload of money. So I was the supervisor and I greeted her and asked her how "the old man was."
The guys that were within hearing distance couldn't believe I had called her husband the "old man". I couldn't for the life of me explain that it was a familiar expression for the husband. She was a bit flabbergasted herself. Still today I get kidded for what I said.

Yes, indeed. He was living in Oxford in the 30's. Unsure of his full name, but he was known as "Blind Jim Ivy" and basically dressed like the Colonel Reb mascot showed. The Colonel Reb mascot made his first live appearance in 1979.

Other historians dispute the Ivy connection. But who else is even mentioned as the model for the mascot?

Don't even get me started about this kind of stupidity. People need to go back and read the memoirs of Gen. Lee and other Virginians during the time. The Virginians initially, and later many of the CSA, knew they would eventually have to move away from slavery. That doesn't mean they didn't support slavery, as was an accepted practice of the time...heck, the US Capitol was built, in part, by slave labor. This was a very complex issue of the time and many of the buildings, schools, and monuments of today are named for people that have in some way supported this institution.

But, more than that, people ignore the overt discrimination of the North and Western territories at the time. Many of these governments treated blacks the same as their southern counterparts, except they didn't own them. Many of the states had laws whose aims were to keep blacks out of their state. Everyone likes to focus on slavery when talking about the civil war and how wonderful the Union the was, but things were a bit more complicated than that.
