Protest over black Missouri teenager's shooting by police turns to looting, vandalism

Quote:What began as a peaceful protest of the shooting of an 18-year-old unarmed black man by a police officer in a St. Louis suburb turned into what the town's mayor called a "huge mess" as several businesses were looted and cars were vandalized.

A candlelight vigil was held Sunday evening in Ferguson, Mo. for Michael Brown, whom witnesses and authorities said was shot several times by an officer who had scuffled with the teen and another person.

Afterward, some people looted a convenience store. Several other stores along a main road near the shooting scene were broken into and looted, including a check-cashing store, a boutique and a small grocery store.

People were seen carrying bags of food and toilet paper. TV footage showed streams of people walking out of a liquor store carrying bottles of alcohol, and in some cases protesters were standing atop police cars or taunting officers who stood stoic, often in riot gear.

Other witnesses reported seeing people vandalize police cars and kick in windows. Television footage showed windows busted out of a TV station van.

"Right now, the small group of people are creating a huge mess," Ferguson's mayor, James Knowles, told KTVI-TV. "Contributing to the unrest that is going on is not going to help. ... We're only hurting ourselves, only hurting our community, hurting our neighbors. There's nothing productive from this."

As the investigation of Brown's death progresses, "we understand people want to vent their frustrations. We understand they want to speak out," Knowles added. "We're going to obviously try to urge calm."

St. Louis County Executive Charlie Dooley said there were no reports of injuries but confirmed widespread property damage. "Right now I'm just worried about people, not property," he said.

RE: Protest over black Missouri teenager's shooting by police turns to looting, vandalism
There's so much to this story. First reports we heard here (I'm in Missouri) was that the kid was fleeing the cop and the cop shot him. The second story says the kid and several of his buddies attacked the cop and the cop shot, it only killed this kid. The third story says this kid attacked and the cop shot him.

I've also heard that the family is claiming the kid was a good kid because he graduated hs and was going to go to college. No offense that doesn't make someone a good kid.

This is going to be one I'll have to sit back and see what the investigation shows up. Now the looting, that's just ridiculous.

The protest over an officer involved shooting turns to a flash mob, then theft, looting and destroying property. WTF are these people thinking? C'mon, lefters justify this. This is your fantasy land turned reality.

Actually SOAF, the vigil/protest was peaceful. It was some thugs/crooks that decided to use this to their advantage and it steamrolled.

These are stores that I regularly use that were hit. Congratulations, thugs. You've hurt your own neighborhood! I hope they catch everyone of you MF's and throw the book at you.

It gets strange now ,there are reports of some protests (Possibly) breaking into a police station. And one county cop says he had to shoot at looters who broke into his home.

Let me guess... About 10% of the looters are legitimately lashing out in anger over the shooting; the other 90% just see it as an opportunity to grab some free stuff and break a few things along the way.

Heard a report that someone was able to hack into the file system and distributed all the cops' addresses.

I guess now the fight will be that police don't need guns.

When protests become an enabling event for criminal behaviour, there will be reason to limit protests for public safety. MLK is rolling in his grave.

So here's an idea.

If protests turn into looting and riots, shoot the guys that are breaking into these stores if you catch them. Shoot their legs of something, maim them so they'll learn their lesson. If they go to the hospital, they'll be caught, otherwise they can sit around for however long it takes to recover, if they recover. I don't care one way or the other.

maybe 0.5% were angry. The others saw the liquor store.

And free food or other free items they've been eyeballing. Those people make me sick.

Herd mentality, the same thing that makes people think turning over cars and burning couches are the appropriate way to celebrate a football win.

Very true, however, if it's an old, unusable car or couch then I couldn't care less... I mean, its West Virginia 03-wink ... But breaking into stores and stealing stuff is a totally different story.

I wonder if any of these folks will be prosecuted.

Like I said, Eric Holder is eyeing this, just the shooting part. He's turned a blind eye to the looting part.

There's been a surge in random items hitting Craigslist in North St. Louis County, I don't think some of these thieves will remain on the streets for long.

When you have a county official saying

Quote:"Right now I'm just worried about people, not property," he said.

I don't think the effort will be there to go after these people, citing too costly, thus enabling further flash mob mentality.
