NCAA announces they'll appeal favorable O'Bannon ruling

There may have been a few decisions favorable to the NCAA, but IMO it was terrible. Are athletic departments going to hire accountants and lawyers to deal with athletes?

It's SBNation but still this kind of stuff always makes me laugh.

If it's "Favorable", why are you appealing. 03-lmfao

Good luck. Anyone who followed this trial closely and read any of the court documents knew the NCAA was going to get creamed. Frankly, I think the judges ruling was better for the NCAA than I thought it would be. It could have been much worse (and still could be as other cases pushing for complete unfettered free agency for players are out there).

Amateurism has been cracked open by the courts. The NCAA and Northwestern (yes, different cases, but same point) can appeal all they like. You can't put the genie back in the bottle. For now, the courts, current law, and equity are in charge. That will change back.

The problem with the courts being in charge is that it will take many years, and much unpredictability, to reach any status quo. All businesses (and big college sports is very much a business, with the NCAA being almost like a Mafia) hate unpredictability.

So big college sports will go to Congress and have laws passed to take the courts out of the equation. Big college sports will spend millions on lobbyists and political donations to make sure the outcome suits them. The athletes will get a little more than they have now, but they will not win. They have no power.

To quote Stalin: "How many divisions does the Pope have?"

i dont know why everyone is peeing their pants over this. all it said was an athlete can get paid if his likeness is used. big freaking deal.

even then, if the athlete signs a waiver it really doesnt matter. its not like the judge said that the athletes get X% of the revenue generated by college football.

no one will use the athletes likness or image anymore. wgaf
