Yet another reason why UMass is NOT a candidate...
THIS should yet again provide a definitive answer to the question "Should the American invite UMass to join the conference?"

NO!!!

From the article:
"To make up the difference of $75,000, which is essentially three full scholarships, so instead of 85 (scholarships) we may do 82 at the full-cost of attendance.”

We've already been down the lack of UMass being able to provide sufficient facilities. Now--surprise, surprise, surprise--UMass' AD says "Yeah, we can keep up..." but one plan is to "keep up" by not funding all the scholarships. More half-assing on UMass' part. Someone needs to tell this guy that UMass is, in fact, not keeping up and not handling things.

They simply are not a viable D1 FB program.

RE: Yet another reason why UMass is NOT a candidate...
theyve been in the fbs how many years?
atleast they have found an interesting way to keep up

they are a recent fcs team, with mostly an fcs budget trying to grow, if this was the case in 6-7 years from now this would bee a legitimate point ..lets see what they look like fully adjusted

One would assume that if they were in the American, they would be able to cover the cost of those 3 extra scholarships, so I don't think this in itself is a reason to keep them out.

But - as you point out - it does continue to show their pattern of half-assing things, and THAT is a reason to keep them out.

Exactly.

While their tv revenue might increase...their recruiting budget...travel budget (all sports), etc...would go up as well...so there would be no guarantee that UMASS would fund all 85 football scholarships.

They might just keep throwing out excuse after excuse after excuse, etc...

There is no doubt that if UMass can get a hold on their football facilities, that TV market has the opportunity to really really help the American's long term success and negotiations.

Look... It should be clear that they are not getting a handle on anything. It was once argued that UC was afflicted by trying to run a major athletic department with a "MAC mindset." It seems obvious to me that UMass is trying to run a FBS program with an FCS mentality.

The stadium, the scholarships... These are symptoms of a much deeper problem. UMass is trying to play FBS football while not making any of the commitment or investment that playing on this level requires. You can throw all the money you want at a situation like that and they will eat it up and never show improvement. There will always be some other excuse, some other reason why they can't get it done.

On the other hand, if they just cut out the three scholarships altogether, they'd be able to build 30 new seats a year for the next 100 years and get McGuirk Stadium up to 20,000 capacity. 03-idea

RE: Yet another reason why UMass is NOT a candidate...
Dumb question: Does any other FBS program not do 85 scholarships?

Because if Sun Belt and MAC and CUSA programs can do it, it seems as though UMass, who gets a lot more basketball money than schools in any of those three conferences, can do it. If they so choose.

Their academic side won't let them fund it. They are not ready for the big time. We all did it on cusa budgets

UMASS (located in Amherst, MA) is in the #75 TV Market in the USA (Springfield, MA).

What TV market? The entire state of Massachusetts has 3 million people who are primarily located around Metro Boston. From a television market share perspective and from a recruiting perspective UMass is a loosing move for the AAC.

are the state flagship for a state of almost 7 million

florida and florida state arent remotely close to the majority of the florida population but still control the florida markets

Massachusetts population has 7 million not 3

and most state flagships arent located in the metros but in college towns but still control the states markets...

if umass ever becomes competitive, they will control a huge portion of the mass market..
ability to become competitive and facilities are my only 2 issues with them...which are fixable, give them that they'd be worth a ton to the AAC (especially with the added value of a umass/uconn rivalry)

O'leary 's first year we were down to 65-67 scholarships. Players quit, transferred, etc. We had Brandon Marshall playing safety because we didn't have anyone to fulfill that position.

UMass Amherst is the Flag Ship. It has some 27k to 28k students. It's part of the State University System. So to say that this school is the entirety of it's satalites is untrue. Each seperate site has it's own budget and management groups and are treated as seperate entities.

RE: Yet another reason why UMass is NOT a candidate...
UMass I think will be able to survive in FBS because they have the carrot quality basketball series to offer other G5 programs.

They will get basketball oriented G5's to play them like Ohio, Charlotte, New Mexico to play them 1 and 1 in FB with a deal on the basketball side. P5's may schedule them because they know they'll be a weak team. They can avoid signing the stronger G5 schools.

Eventually there is going to be an East Coast FBS conference which UMass could join if they can hang in there as an independent for 10 years. CUSA might work if it shifts eastward.
