Either this or the Power 5 were breaking away to from their own "Division 4" or whatever they planned to call it ---

RE: NY Times: NCAA votes to give greater autonomy to richest conferences
From the article >>>

...Approval by the board was widely seen as a foregone conclusion, in part because the Big 5 had threatened an even more severe alternative: breaking from the N.C.A.A. and taking their massive revenue streams with them.

At a news conference last month, Slive said, “If we do not achieve a positive outcome under the existing big tent of Division I, we will need to consider the establishment of a venue with similar conferences and institutions where we can enact the desired changes in the best interests of our student‑athletes.”...

No they weren't. But they got what they wanted by saying it.

It was either that, or they leave and only play each other.

What happens when they call the bluff?

I prefer the term "Autonomy 5": more accurate and less offensive.

Division 4. They weren't bluffing IMO. Just look around at what's going on in the courts. The P5 had to make these changes. And if they were prevented from making these changes they would have had to split off to get it done. It's that important.

RE: NY Times: NCAA votes to give greater autonomy to richest conferences
It's over folks. this will lead to separate playoff systems. The presidents are also pushing for power 5 to only play each other. Report says that power 5 will set up new rules to go into affect in Oct. 2015. Tigers can't compete anymore. Top recruits will always choose agents, shoe deals and health benefits over Memphis now. They are going to be allowed to sign with the likes of nike. The likes of Tennessee and Arkansas will kill us for recruits now. This is the kind of deal that will kill programs like Memphis who are in the middle of the SEC.

The thing that scares me the most: the Power 5 spokesman said, "this is only a tiny step towards where we want to be."

If Memphis is now only competing for the "Mid Major" national championship, do y'all even care anymore?

P.S. thanks ESPN. I hate you. This is your creation.

We aren't doomed until it happens and the realignment chairs stop.

What's the percentage that it doesn't happen and/or Memphis gets into a power conference.

What about the AAC fighting hard to become a power conference? Is that blown over too?

Every sec team in Arkansas, mississippi, Tennessee, Alabama & Kentucky hates Memphis. They will bury us.

Just hard to believe that the influence of fedex never really did anything for us.

Their influence can't overcome the millions of dollars the power conference teams get from BCS and state inputs.
