RE: 2014-15 C-USA basketball schedule
I think its a fine schedule. The old CAA teams still have rivalry interest and fans recognize the names, likely more than North Texas or UTSA etc. We have to make up the travel costs of CUSA by having more regional OOC schedules. Yeah, it'd be great if Wood had told NC State we'd send the football team to Raleigh that extra time for $ AND a home and home with the mens hoops team, but this is not bad. Just win and the rest takes care of itself. I see 17 wins before post season, so its not like a walk through the park anyway.

After this season will there be any C-USA teams that have not played at the Ted since we joined the league?

If all, or most, of the games against ex-CAA foes are to clean up existing contracts and get them out of the way then I'm fine with that for this season. I'd like to see that number dwindle to VCU and W&M in the future, one game a year against each.

I'd drop W&M in favor of Mason. More years than not, it would provide a better boost to our SOS.

I'd be ok with playing VCU, Richmond & GMU every year. All are good programs, easy travel and relevant to our fan base. Throw in a good pre-season tournament and we would be well on our way to nice schedule. The last remaining piece to the puzzle would be to land a home-and-home with a power conference team or two.

If I was going to play someone in DC, my choices would be a) Georgetown b) UMD c) GW d) AU. Three of them we don't recruit against, and GW's a good, solid program. I'd rather play downtown than Fairfax

RE: 2014-15 C-USA basketball schedule
I actually think there is room on the non-conference slate for W&M, VCU, Richmond, and W&M every year - one game. That leaves 6 non-conference games with one of them being reserved for an exempt tournament which equals 3 or 4 games counting as one. So with the remaining 5, you can schedule appropriately for your needs/ambitions...

The VCU and Richmond series need to be set up so we play one of them at the Ted and one of them in Richmond each year.

It's kind of off topic but if this year is any example it will be very difficult to be a Lady Monarch AND a Monarch fan in the future. Both teams will be playing the same opponent on the same day. It's hard to be in more than one place at a time.

I really don't see the allure of the W&M game. I'd rather play GaSt every year than them, at least the panthers are good at basketball.

RE: 2014-15 C-USA basketball schedule
I like having VCU and Richmond on the schedule every year. The rest of them I don't care about. I dont have a problem scheduling them, but I would like to see one guarantee road game every year against a Duke, KY, Kansas and maybe just 1 cupcake home game. This schedule may be decent, but you have to play on the road. Unless we beat VCU and they finish a top 15 team and somehow win the Paradise Jam, we are going to have trouble getting a meaningful postseason invite.

W&M gives the visiting fans a chance to see an extra game and guaranteed local press coverage. That is the allure.

WM is a team in the 757, and we been conference mates for many years. There seems to be a lot of interest in this game. It's usually the best travel road game for ODU fans and it brings the biggest crowd to WM. Plus the connection of the schools thru our history. Keep the game.

I understand the feelings in the past about W&M, but they have gotten the best of us the last couple of years

Exactly why the games with Willie and Mary should continue. A rivalry can't truly be a rivalry if one team always wins. We have a long (positive) history with them and I agree with the poster who said that games with W&M generate media coverage...plus I love to travel to Williamsburg to provide them with the beat downs that they have become accoustomed to.

Look at all the games against the Texas schools like this: it only increases the odds you end up with a really good seed in the conference tournament.

I agree that we want to play the best conference schedule possible each year. Playing OOC games should be requested annually by our administration. Remember too that there is our women's program conference schedule as well which needs to be considered in making up our conference schedule. I would like to play OOC games with VCU (home and away annually) as well as Richmond and George Mason. I think we could drop one or more of the cupcakes to make room for an annual game with W&M. By doing so, we have increased the overall quality of our OCC. that would free up a spot or two each year for ACC and ACC type quality opponents. You are on the right track by advocating a general upgrade in the OOC schedules.

RE: 2014-15 C-USA basketball schedule
Games against W&M and VCU should continue in perpetuity, barring seismic changes. There's more to rivalries than what happened last season, the last five seasons or even the last 20.

And Norfolk State should be on the schedule every year. It's good for the community. I'm of the belief that similarly-classified programs in the same city should always play each other, at least in the big sports. That doesn't mean home-and-home if it doesn't call for it (Duke vs. NC Central, for example), but at least they should be on each other's schedule s

Not to sound incredibly douchey, but if William & Mary and Norfolk State are rivalries or even meaningful games, our program is not where it needs to be. Yes, I understand we haven't been much better, if better at all, than W&M lately, but we should aspire to be in a different stratosphere.
