Be the CFP committee: 2008
Bill Connelly’s original article
http://www.sbnation.com/ncaa-football/20...-committee

Complete BCS standings for your perusal
http://www.footballfoundation.org/Progra...hives.aspx

Andy Staples began his assessments in 2003… http://www.si.com/college-football/2013/...-committee

The anti-2007—too many good choices rather than not enough of them. I think I agree with him though. Oklahoma vs. USC. Texas vs. Florida. I’ve said this before, but this is the one year in the BCS era where 8 slots are needed to determine a real champ. It’s one thing to have a team or two angry…but to leave out two co-champs (Texas Tech and Alabama essentially), another champ (PSU), and an undefeated mid-major is unacceptable. However, not every year is like this one. Few are.

I would add a thought—what happens when a team has a bad track record in the past? I gave USC the 4th spot in 2006; what if they stunk it up and wasted the opportunity? On the other hand, what if USC won the whole thing as the No. 4 seed in 2006? Ohio State in 2006 and 2007 gave the whole Big Ten a bad name. After those two blowouts, it was popular opinion that 2008 PSU was behind EVERYONE else from major divisions with one loss. Will THAT play into the committee’s mindset...past conference performances?

Mess grade (how much controversy would exist)—F. I’ve been saving my “F” grade for this year!
Staples: Oklahoma, USC, Florida, Alabama (over Texas)

One thing- Texas would likely be the Big 12 champ instead of Oklahoma. Oklahoma would not have had the Big 12 title game, and thus no discriminator between them and Texas. Texas had the head to head. So Texas for sure would be in. USC and Florida definitely in. 4th slot between Oklahoma, Alabama team that had just lost, Penn St(dealing with the Big Ten perception issue). So I think Oklahoma.

Seeds would be really interesting. Oklahoma wouldn't have had the bump from the Big 12 title game. Think probably 1 Florida 2 Texas 3 USC and 4 Oklahoma.

While I'd like to think the committee won't consider such things, we all know that the ESPN Talking Heads WILL talk about such things in the weeks prior to final selection.

There's so many things which I find interesting about the committee and the selection process --- this is another one of them.

One thing I've noticed about the NCAA Basketball Selection process --- getting truly surprised is pretty rare any more (it did happen with NC State this past March). ESPN talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and talks and talks about bubble teams and who should be in and blah blah blah blah blah for the whole month prior. It's definitely feels like the ESPN discussions have a strong influence on committee member opinions.

FWIW, my 2008 seedings would be (1) Oklahoma, (2) Florida, (3) Texas, (4) USC.

RE: Be the CFP committee: 2008
BCS Standings:
1 Oklahoma 12-1 B12 champ
2 Florida 12-1 SEC champ (beat Alabama in SEC CCG)
3 Texas 11-1 (beat Oklahoma)
4 Alabama 12-1 SEC runner up (lost to Florida in SEC CCG)
5 USC 11-1 P10 champ
6 Utah 12-0 MWC champ
7 Texas Tech 11-1
8 Penn State 11-1 B1G co-champs (beat Ohio St.)
9 Boise State 12-0 WAC champ
10 Ohio State 10-2 B1G co-champs (lost to Penn St.)

AP had it 1) Florida, 2) Oklahoma, 3) Texas, 4) Alabama, 5) USC, 6) Penn St., 7) Utah, 8) Texas Tech

The Top 4 are the same, with Bama 4th in both. Bama's loss was in the SEC CCG, so they had a clear chance to claim a CFP slot. USC was also very close to Bama in the BCS rankings score.

My Football Final Four would be Oklahoma, Florida, Texas and USC

Utah should be that 4th team in.

Utah-

Beat the team that beat USC
Went unbeaten against a schedule comparable to the one that PSU lost against (According to Sagarin)
Didn't play and lose to a playoff contender the week before(Bama)
Didn't get blown out (Texas Tech)

Nothing would change. Oklahoma, Texas, and Texas tech all finished in a 3-way tie in big 12 south at 11-1. The BCS standings decided the tiebreaker that year and picked the division champion. Under the CFP, the committee would pick the division champion and they still would have picked Oklahoma and oklahoma still would have won the B12 CCG in 2008.

highly debatable. Look at the polls the week before the Big 12 title game. in Harris- Texas up by 6 votes. In Coaches- Oklahoma up by 1 vote. AP- Texas up by 8 votes. So i don't think it's a lock at all that Oklahoma would have been ahead of Texas at all with a committee. Not by a long shot. I think in a case like this, head to head would factor in a LOT and I'm fairly certain that they would have put Texas in ahead of them.

RE: Be the CFP committee: 2008
The real question is why does Texas Tech always get screwed in these type of discussions.

Texas Tech, Texas, and Oklahoma all finished 11-1 in the Big 12 south.

Texas Tech beat Texas
Texas beat Oklahoma
Oklahoma beat Texas Tech.

So why does everyone say it was a given that Oklahoma and Texas deserved a spot in the final 4 but nobody ever mentions TT.

I am not saying I actually think Texas Tech is better or even equal to okie or Texas, but the final standings suggested they should been given equal consideration to okie and Texas.

At the very least, the 3-way tie should negate the Texas beat oklahoma argument because by that logic, texas tech deserves the last spot in the playoffs because Tech beat Texas.

So I don't want to read any more arguments that Texas deserves a spot because Texas beat oklahoma.

Tech was the lowest ranked and suffered a humiliating blowout loss. They also had 2 additional close calls. (Nebraska and Baylor)

So when you say who do you eliminate, it's pretty easy to eliminate them based on how badly they lost and the fact they were ranked last.

From there people compare the other two against each other.

If you get blown out you tend to lose any shot at qualifying unless it's an abnormally weak field.

After Tech is DQ'ed by the blowout it's a simple matter of comparing the other two against each other.

You are just kidding yourself if you think Texas wouldn't have gotten in as Big 12 champs. The polls had Texas up by 13 votes. That's the human component. Only reason Oklahoma got it was the computers. I totally think that the committee would give it to Texas.

OU was 2nd behind Alabama before the ccgs. They won the tiebreak in a 3 way tie with 3 11-1 teams as they were slightly higher in the BCS.

OU is #1 seed, Florida #2, Texas #3 and I think USC slips into #4 because of the last loss scenario knocking down Alabama and USC being a conference champ.

OU had a slightly tougher ooc than Texas, but they really got bumped up because Texas lost later. Texas had an unprecedented murderer's row in mid-season, playing FIVE straight teams ranked #11 or higher at the time. They lost the 5th game on the road on a TD with 1 second left. But all that was forgotten by the pollsters at the end of the season. Noone got within 24 points of that Texas team except the 2 Oklahoma school (OU 45-35, OSU 28-24) and Texas Tech.

Absolutely zero.

Tech gets out of the discussion because they lost 65-21 to OU in the next to last game of the season.

Oklahoma may have been 2nd in the BCS BUT that was all due to the computers. As I brought up BEFORE the Big 12 title game- Texas was ahead of them in the polls. That's important. With a committee, Texas would have been ahead.

Texas and OU weren't getting left out and neither was UF. Utah had a good argument vs every other option.

oklahoma because it was 12-1 and won its conference.

Texas Tech over Texas because Texas and Texas tech were both 11-1, neither was the conference champion, and Texas tech beat Texas head to head.

Tech was destroyed by a landslide in their loss and barely beat UT at home after UT played a gauntlet of highly ranked teams back to back to back before coming to Lubbock. Don't be obtuse, a team that gets blown out is the odd one out.

If it's now, Oklahoma would not have been 12-1, there wouldn't have been a Big 12 title game. All 3 would have been co-champs. TT gets cancelled out due to the blowout, so Texas and Oklahoma would have been the 2 that had a chance. Given Texas BEAT Oklahoma, Texas gets the nod in terms of the higher seeding. If one of the 2 were to get left out, it's Oklahoma.
