So for those more familiar with the financial inner workings of a football program I've always wondered if coaches use 85 scholarships regardless of attrition. Sometimes after a coaching change you'll hear a coach say they are down to 67 guys on scholarship or whatever. Yet we know that scholarships are one year renewables. Why not put some of the walk-ons on scholarship anyway, at least for a year? Especially at a place where they have endowed most of their scholarships

Tough to give a scholarship because of low numbers, and then take it back after one year. A player is either good enough or not. No sense in messing with their minds IMO.

All athletic scholarships are considered 1 year renewable. Would be hard not to get it renewed though, unless you are a complete idiot. Walk-ons are usually not on scholarship, usually earn their way into one eventually if they stick around long enough, do what they are needed to do like play on special teams etc...Sometimes walk-ons work their way into scholarships early cause they are really that good, school might have just overlooked them as recruits or didn't know about them.
