What is the deal with Hayden Fry?
I thought he was an old coach at Iowa, not sure about other stops. There seem to be a lot of joking references to him lately. Anyone want to link me to a thread that explains it, or explain it here? Thanks

RE: What is the deal with Hayden Fry?
You must be new to college football my friend. The mere mention of his name causes the tiny hairs on the back of my neck to stand on end.

It was he, Hayden Fry, who lead the North Texas State University Mean Green to that incredible 1977 season and a number 17 ranking in the national polls.

It's seared, seared I tell you, in my memory.

Doesn't matter. That team was one of the all-time greats in college football and it's why the UNTs are immediately recognized by college football fans the world over.

Prestige, tradition, history, the UNTs.

Long Story, but here are the basics

1. Hayden Fry played for North Texas in 1977

2. North Texas Fans referred to that team's 17th ranked finish as proof they were better than all SBC teams. They used Fry's name in the same breath as Mean Joe Green.

3. None of us had ever heard of Hayden Fry before that moment.

Thus, we have decided that Hayden Fry is a demi-god of football and must be praised and worshiped at all times. Cajun Fanatico and I like to bring him up in random threads to see if anyone notices.

We do this with former UNT "Great" Tony Mitchell in basketball as well. Its an inside joke amongst long time Belters.

They beat Texas Arlington and Hayden Fry scored 12 touchdowns, and rushed for 821 yards. He also recovered 4 fumbles on defense and kicked 11 extra points before faking the last one and running it in for two points.

He was the coach of the UNTs though most don't realize that he often slipped into uniform and saved games for the team. He's a legend's legend.

Very much so. Chuck Norris wishes he had the ability of Hayden Fry.

I'm glad you are understanding.
