RE: What is the deal with Hayden Fry?
Fry is sort of a mixed bag. He was OK as head coach at SMU, did well at UNT, made them think sort of big for a time. Thought he could do a Houston, leave the Mo Valley, kick some rear as an indy and parlay that into SWC membership. They went 33-11 as an indy but SWC wasn't going to happen and went to the bigger paycheck of Iowa but in the long run probably set UNT athletics back by leaving the Valley. If they had stayed in the Valley they may have developed a strong enough relationship with Tulsa and Wichita State that they might have staved off being reclassified I-AA, maybe NMSU doesn't ditch the Valley for the Big West, Big West probably goes out of the football business sooner and we would talk about the Valley raiding us rather than whether CUSA might, because CUSA might very well not have happened.

So in other words...CUSA owes its very existence to Hayden Fry?

So the man absolutely IS a visionary!

All those years ago he saw that the eventual formation of C-USA would ultimately lead to the unshackling of the UNTs football program from the lowly, smothering Sun Belt so that the UNTs could finally be all that they could be once again and regain the national, ney, INTERNATIONAL fame that they enjoyed in 1977.

I'm all weepy. Someone pass me a hanky.

I guess we should be flattered. There's more talk of UNT on this board than half of the actual Sun Belt members.04-coffee

Why should you be flattered. We're talking about Hayden Fry, not the 2014 North Texas football team.

Don't besmirch the name of Hayden Fry by throwing this year's North Texas football team into it!

Can I besmirch the name of Hayden Fry?

He loaded the UNT program with so much death, they were a regents vote away from dismantling their team and would have actually done so before UTA did.

If I can't besmirch his name, just delete this post.

ValleyBoy thinks that Hayden Fry just set the bar so high that no other head coach could ever match what he done for the UNT football program therfore it has been all down hill foe the Mean Green ever since. They are still looking for the next Hayden Fry to bring them out of the cesspool that there program has sunk down into.

They beat Texas Arlington and Hayden Fry scored 12 touchdowns, and rushed for 821 yards. He also recovered 4 fumbles on defense and kicked 11 extra points before faking the last one and running it in for two points.

Above average post, for sure.

RE: What is the deal with Hayden Fry?
One thing I remember about Coach Fry is that he signed the first scholarship black football player in the Southwest Conference, Jerry LeVias. (Baylor had a black walk-on player on their team.)

I'm old enough to have witnessed LeVias in action at the Cotton Bowl, SMU's home field back then, in 1966. The Mustangs were on their way to an SWC championship, a top 10 ranking and a Cotton Bowl berth that season. I still remember the game of SMU vs Texas A&M (university of my first college degree) recounted in the linked article from SMU's athletics site.

http://www.smumustangs.com/sports/m-foot...ts-23.html

It was an interesting game for me. I stayed in Dallas with one of my relatives who was a Vice-Provost for SMU. Jerry LeVias was from my hometown. I was/am a third generation Aggie. 04-cheers That was the first of way too many games I witnessed where A&M seemingly had the game under control only to get outscored in the end.

SMU, LeVias (and Chuck Hixson) did it to us the next year at Kyle Field, but our season turned out better. We won our last seven games winning the SWC for the first time since the Bear Bryant days and beat a Bear Bryant coached Alabama squad in the Cotton Bowl.
