I've known gang members--also friendly with police officers through my job--and what you said is partially true and probably most true in larger cities. But, it is also the employer that pays the most for "easy" work.

You go to a kid and say that they can sell something for $13 dollars a unit and that they can keep $3 from every sale and they'd have friends to have their back. It's easy to make $300 a week in the right spots and, for a 11 year old who's never seen money, it keeps them there.

It's also as true of a meritocracy as you can get.

The crack epidemic of late 80's early 90's definitely spelled more murders, shootings drive bys and all the rest. But we're getting close, no doubt! Then they all got either kilt, locked up or grew out of it. AND the sentencing guidelines for rock were harsh enough to serve as either a deterrent or a de facto life sentence.

Now? Their kids are of age. Meth is the new crack, or oxy or H or whatever else and we're working like little bees to normalize this stuff and decriminalize it as much as we can. Why? Cause it's hard work and expensive to catch dope peddlers and chase down their victims. So, here we are again.

This will be the next full blown turf war- those that have a claim on the areas as legacy dealers or residents, and those that are invading this Country as we speak. I've lived within blocks of MS-13 houses in NoVa, going back nearly 25 years. Pretty ruthless folks, shot a kid dead on his parents front porch of their townhouse in broad daylight for being late on his payment to them. I think he was a 17 YO HS Junior.

So, my money is on the illegal invaders. And we've essentially invited them in.

This is from the last time that oklalittledixie tried to use a post from The Economic Collapse to prove crime in this country was out of control. It is not. Now, I don't care enough to find city-specific data, but it sure would be odd if the overall crime rate was plummeting while the big cities were turning into war zones.

Here is an article that seems to be the same one the The Economic Collapse article was based on. The increase here was mostly due to relatively minor crimes that aren't reported to the police. Even with the recent uptick, the NCVS results are still well below those from the mid-90s.

Also, the FBI major crime statistics don't track simple assaults (no weapon or serious injury) and the NCVS doesn't track murder (hard to answer affirmatively to that one) or arson. Of course, another reason for the discrepancy might be that getting the stuffing knocked out of you by a cop only counts as an assault in the NCVS.

And 2013 had the fewest police officer fatalities since World War II.
