Watches
I've been thinking about buying a watch. I haven't had one in a half of a decade or more, but I would like to detach from my cell phone on occasion. Anyone have a to die for watch?

Is a Rolex worth the money?

I've got one of these. Payed about $160 for it. 12 years old and I've replace one band and a couple of batteries.

I've got one that looks very similar to that one. It's been sitting in a drawer for a couple of decades now, right beside my gold Gator Bowl Pulsar.

RE: Watches
If you aren't into watches a Rolex will just carry a price tag.

A good Rolex will be at least $10k. The lower end stuff will tend to identify you with the folks that know watches. The only positive is you buy into a trade up track when you get a Rolex.

If you want a nice, quality watch that looks good, performs well, and is more reasonable I'd look at a TAG.

A decent Tag will run you $2-5k.

RE: Watches
These prices are out of my league.... Timex or Casio is how I ball LOL. A few times I have forgotten to put my watch on and trying to be cool and use the clock on the cell phone is too annoying.

You should start wearing it. Those watches are sweet.

I do on those extremely rare occasions when I wear a vest with the watch pocket. But since I quit working, I only wear a suit to funerals and weddings these days.

Anyone who spends that much money on a watch has a big sucker painted on their forehead.

RE: Watches
Many years ago I read that a simple gold/white standard watch on a black leather band is always correct. And I've followed that advice. Just recently there was an article in the Wall Street Journal about the resurgence of this standard.

And if by chance you wear a digital watch, your mother says finish your algebra homework.

I've always been told that if you want bling, then buy a Rolex or something similar, but if you want accuracy, buy a cheap Casio.

GB, one of the shopping channels frequently does a thing with Invicta watches where you can get them dirt cheap or sometimes two-4-one.

Except for the whole in your pocket thing. I can't stand stuff in my front pockets.

It's a good watch. I've beat the hell out of it over the years, and it's still ticking.

You're supposed to wear a suit with a vest. All vested suits come equipped with watch pockets in the vest.

RE: Watches
The pocket watch is a bit old school. You won't find many folks wearing one these days. You have to have a certain personality and such to pull one off. Otherwise, you look like a hipster.

There are plenty of nice watches in the $500 to $1000 range. A Rolex becomes worth it only when set next to one of those. It's like buying audio equipment; it sounds great until you hear something that costs 5x as much. The same is true of watches.

If you want to keep it under $1,000 but get the best build and most stylish time piece I'd suggest Victorinox.

So a Rolex keeps time 5x better than $200 watch?

A Rolex is as much about jewelry as anything else.
