When they leave the MAC do they get any play off money?
I believe Army and BYU get four hundred thousand because their independents . So does U MASS get the same pay out if independent ?

I don't know, but I don't see UMASS making it at the FBS level without a conference.

I agree But they might try to make it until something opens up for them. That is not a lot of money but buys an FCS home game.

They need to beg the Sunbelt for membership. They cannot be successful as an Indy. They probably can survive for a few years as an Indepedent, but not much more. If folks are right about realignment being dormant for the next decade then UMass is going to end up back at the FCS level. They are unwilling to make the investments necessary to attract an FBS conference offer. I doubt any conference will invite them with thier current attendance----and that wont improve without addressing thier current stadium situation. UMass wants to get an invite first and then deal with the stadium. It doesn't work that way.

They're either going to have to commit to FBS by moving their olympic sports too, or go back to FCS.

Well if UMass has tons of money they can just buy their FBS games each year, but have never understood their program to have that much money, not even close. If they did looks as if they would have increased size and updated their home football stadium years ago.

RE: U MASS question
my UMASS ?
Why didn't AAC take them this yr to get CCG, that's 1or2 million
8 wins spread around would be 2 more bowl berths, that's 1or2 million
BB credits this yr if UMASS makes tourn, that's 1or2 million
savings on travel cost, that's 1or2 million
UCONN vs UMASS at Foxboro, that's 1or2 million

UMass will try to cobble together a schedule. They're apparently working on it. If UMass doesn't go to the Sun Belt, they know they need some OOC games and fast (especially home ones).

Anybody Have Any Idea If They Receive The Same Payment As Other Independents.

Personally I think BYU and Army are getting screwed.
Conferences would love to have them that proves their value.
Still they receive a third of what others get.

If they think they are being screwed, they can always fix that by joining a conference. Navy did. BYU apparently figures that the $900M or so they sacrifice by not being in a G5 conference is more than offset by not having to share media and bowl revenues. If they got a P5 invite, the math would probably be different.

As to the original question, a presentation of expected first year payouts by a representative of the CFP said the $922M would be shared by "the three remaining independents". By remaining, he meant "other than Notre Dame". In 2014, that is BYU, Army and Navy. In 2015, Navy will be in the AAC. So, if UMass is one of "the remaining independents" they presumably will share equally whatever the payout is for that year, which contractually will be greater than the 2014 amount (since the contract payouts increase annually over the 12 year life of the contract).

All or nothing UMASS.

If it was all or nothing, we obviously would have went with the MAC and not the Sun Belt. The MAC was rated #12 as a basketball conference and the Sun Belt #19.

Believe UMass will first take care of the perception that we'll always be bad this season. Granted playing all P5 team OOC will not help with the wins. We'll continue to improve attendance in the 20k area with sell outs at McGuirk.

The Sun Belt football membership is highly desired, but their are contingency plans.

This is the banner hanging at the Boston Harbor Hotel lobby, 70 Rowes Wharf.

UMass' FBS life hangs on sucking it up and shopping its basketball and other olympic sports along with the pigskin. While it won't catch a major or the AAC as long as UConn is there, if UMass is willing to park basketball somewhere, they could go to any of the others.

If UMass had been willing to park its basketball anywhere but the AAC, I think they'd still be in the MAC. There are no other G5 conferences that are demonstrably a better basketball option.

I think hoops in CUSA is a step up from the MAC and Sun Belt. CUSA doesn't seem to have much interest in expansion right now though. What are they at, 14 already?

All independents received the same amount $320k and that is what UMASS will get. If you want more Playoff $$ and bowls access, join a conference.

Which is why UMass will go to any FBS conference that will take them as a football only member. They get $900K out of the gate that doesn't come out of the pockets of their new conference and they solve their scheduling problems.

Their athletic department is still going to bleed a ton of red ink, but they have shown they are willing to tolerate that with heavy subsidies.
