He's had plenty of chances to show appreciation, but these answers are pandering and illogical. He can already go to dinner with most of these guys whenever he wants and probably already does. Who answers a question like this in this way naturally ? And I understand why, but it still rubs me the wrong way to see him continue to bring up Calipari over and over again. JM is right. "The most Josh answer ever" and everyone knows it. It makes him look ridiculous. He genuinely needs an experienced, good PR person.

Wow!

RE: The four people Josh Pastner says he would take to dinner
it's pretty easy to see the connection...Those are the people he is grateful to for getting him the gig here:
Lute mentored him
Cal hired him here.
RC promoted him to Head Coach.
Tom Bowen signed him to a multiple year contract.

He is appreciative of who gave him this opportunity to do something really special.

Now, I agree with the poster here that said he would not want to be sitting next to Rick 03-lmfao in an Italian restaurant. ---I would just like to amend that to include any restaurant, bar or grill.

Josh Pastner was one of those rare individuals born not-hating people; the rest of us...well...lol

That is the counter argument, keep this in mind too. He is hoops addict. He doesn't exactly appear to have a lot of other non-hoops stuff going on. Work-aholics tend to be friends with those they work with. Those are the 4 most important people to his career development.

I actually believe he would totally take those exact four to dinner and love it. I think the difference is most of us would us it to meet people we wouldn't be able to meet (my 4 would not return my calls, obviously, especially Murcutt who is a crotchety old man) and since people he finds important and wants to meet might find it cool to meet him too.

Also, he might feel very comfortable around those 4, and he might be relaxed. That is also possible.

Who knows. Like I said, I get the criticism, but it's small, small, change. And honestly that really might be his 4.

There are some other 'famous' coaches he likes, though. He could have taken Larry Brown, for example. There seems to be a Memphis hoops theme in this one (after Lute) Memphis being the start of his Head Coaching career.

Stammers could bring the beer.
Easterwood for his Tiger basketball knowledge (as long as he brings his sister-in-law)
Bluebeard for his inside the program knowledge
21-17 to wax poetically about Prince Mongo

RE: The four people Josh Pastner says he would take to dinner
I think criticizing somebody for the list they give is lame. It's not the critics' damn list. It's his. They can make their own friggin' list, and let the rest of us criticize it, lol.

Being young, aware of how fortunate he is, and completely focused on his job, it sounds like a perfectly logical list to me.

Mine would be different, but I'm in a completely different place in life.

Thomas Edison - I'd like to learn more about all the experimental failures he endured to get to the successes that define him now.

Charles Darwin - I'd like to understand how he came to his conclusions, and discuss with him how he dealt with the skeptics.

Abraham Lincoln - I'd like to discover all the unknown decisions and dilemmas he faced during the Civil War, and what his private thinking process was.

Robin Williams - With all the seriousness going on at that dinner party, we'd need one guy to make us laugh.

Oh, and the party would be a tailgate on Tiger Lane, catered by Steven Reichlen. Except I'd make him use charcoal or wood (to hell with the rules, lol). And we would have unlimited craft beer, ice cold. On a clear, crisp October day.

To be fair, all the other coaches had corndog answers.

We all know the honest answer would be : Recruits, Recruits, Recruits and Recruits

Edison is a great choice. If you are ever in south Florida hit Fort Myers and visit his winter home there. Amazing.

But I didn't know we could invite the deceased.

I didn't see any rules saying we couldn't pick historic figures. I'm still working on a list of living folks, but they wouldn't be as interesting. In fact, I'd name about a dozen more dead folks before moving on to living ones, besides Williams.

I'd invite the three Bronte sisters and Emily Dickinson and try to get a five way going.

Yea...I was thinking there are way more dead people than living I'd like to have dinner with. I wanna see how they hold up in the modern world.

I'm going with....Julius Cesar, Shakespeare, Sappho and maybe some religious figure, just for balance.
