RE: Matte NIU helmets in lockers
Careful beachboy, this sounds like too much logic pointing out that we've had black helmets since 1984, that's like four decades now! But I suppose if you can't remember past cardinal jerseys with black pants, it doesn't equal enough time.

GCD, why not start confusing things even though the current logo has become very branded and identifiable? Think about how much NIU could make if the helmet was considered advertising space? The transition opportunity is here, put the old DeKalb Ag flying ear of corn on the helmet for this year's opener and then replace it with corporate sponsorship from Apple, Chevy, Progressive. Like Who You Crappin'? noted, stadiums can't exist anymore without naming rights especially since HuskieRak says tradition is overrated. Seriously, who cares what the logo on the helmet looks like as long as the team wins.

There are plenty out there who think the Oregon uniforms and helmets are ugly as all get out. I'd rather have a recruit who respects his coaches, teammates and the school than one who is strictly convinced by wearing some butt-ugly helmet or uniform. But for now, we have to grin and bear it until this latest fad passes. One thing that becomes clear reading the posts on this board, the "young" ones have no understanding of tradition, they have no sense of history and they don't care. They're the ones shocked to find out we've played Indiana in basketball in DeKalb, or if you take Maryland out of the mix, no B1G team has stepped foot in Huskie Stadium, they have no concept of a national champion or repeat All-America gymnasts. So you're not alone, you're just not "trending."

Can you tell me what history NIU has ever had regarding helmets? I understand the cardinal jerseys with black pants, but NIU has had between 10-15 different helmet combinations throughout the years. That does not present any sort of "tradition" for that sort of thing.

The NI would be awesome for nostalgia sake. I hope they'll do it for one game but the dog head I believe is the fresher, more modern, and better look.

Are the helmets going to have any graphics on them this year?

Unless we've REEEEALLY upped the football budget, those are both practice helmets and game helmets. Some of the big boys have both, but we never have.

There will certainly be graphics on the helmets, but the appliques get scratched up pretty easily, so you wait until as late as possible to apply them.

This pic was from last year when the Dark Dog Unis were unveiled to the team.

I am guessing this WAS a matte helmet and it wasn't just the lighting.
