but point being, in the end, kids are bullied and beat up for hundreds of reasons. The "plague" of it happening to gay kids in proportion to other kids is exaggerated..

The father goes to school with the kid? This is about bullying in schools.
And if being called names is too much for a kid's self esteem, what's he going to do when he gets rejected when he asks someone out on a date or when someone he loves dumps him?
Constant harassment by numerous people is far different than the one time rejection you describe. Bullying is not an opportunity to learn conflict resolution. It's completely different.
It's not healthy to be bullied, and that includes by kids calling others names (repeatedly). Schools have long been lax in letting this behavior slide (read CS Lewis' autobiography as an example). But that's all the more proof that claims that this is a new plague for gay students is dishonest propaganda.
Quote: it's a Little League game and it's it's the bottom of the 9th, two outs and the bases are loaded. A 12 year old pitcher is pitching to a 12 year old batter. One of them will be the goat. Get used to it.
That's nuts. You really want to break the spirit of a 12 year old? People take losses...and then can come back from them. That's what should be encouraged. You don't get that if you ridicule a kid and get him anxious by any competition.

I'm talking about self esteem and disappointment.

The father would call him a ******, and would give him more chores than his brother who was a football player, make him man up. Dad would also push him around and stuff. The brother is the one who actually told the school counselors about it.

Again, the exception proves the rule. How many kids come tell the counselors what great parents they have?

I knew one openly gay kid in high school and everybody liked him because he was a nice guy. People like folks who are comfortable with themselves. He was and he got along fine.

I used to get bullied for having buck teeth and being chubby. It hurt my self esteem but fought back and I eventually got over it. I don't think kids should be bullied at all but I also don't think we should go out of our way to make some kids "more equal" than others. That's just as damaging IMHO if not more so, it doesn't help with coping skills at all.

More to the point, how many straight kids have problems w/ parents?
Once again, fitbud is just a ******* illiterate who wastes this board's time and his community's money.

Kids get bullied for all kinds of reasons. Most however fight back and it stops. However, their are those who are physically and mentally unable to do that. Gay people tend to fall into that category, in disproportionate numbers.

Schools should focus on the types of bullying that are a little less natural:
A former teacher at Concord's Woodside Elementary School has taken the stand in his own defense in the molestation case against him.
Joseph Martin, 46, took the stand at 9 a.m. Wednesday in a Martinez courtroom.
He's charged with 150 counts of child molestation involving 14 former fourth and fifth grade students.
In court Wednesday he said his frequent back and chest patting of students was a way to calm down youngsters with attention deficit disorder or other learning disabilities.
He said he would have them sit next to him in class so they could stay focused.]
