RE: 32 years ago today (7-28)
netflix has a great selelction of WWII documentaries. my favorite so far was "Hitlers Children"
Hitler’s Children is a film about the descendants of some of the most powerful figures in the Nazi regime, such as Heinrich Himmler, Hans Frank, Hermann Göring, and Rudolf Höss, who have inherited a legacy that permanently associates them with one of the greatest crimes in history. For more than 60 years they lived in the shadows trying to rebuild their lives without the constant reminders of what their fathers and grandfathers once did.
They discuss the delicate balance they reached as they negotiate between the natural admiration that children have toward their parents and their innate revulsion at their parents’ crimes, and the challenges of protecting their families as they pass their name down to future generations-or decide not to produce any descendants at all. The film also explores how they relate to the other side, the victims of their fathers' crimes, for whom the terror of the Holocaust is still much alive

Be careful believing anything on the History Channel. Their research is abominable. This last travesty, The World Wars, was so riddled with blatant factual errors I could not watch it. The World War II forums are filled with lists of the factual errors on almost every show they air.
Gudrun Burwitz, nee Himmler, not only is not repulsed by her father but openly embraces him and his mission.

Just saying, when I see History Channel I want folks to understand how sloppy their research can be. I wonder if the film you're referring to is based on Gerald Posner's book of the same title?
But thanks for the head's up, I haven't seen this one and will now have to see it.
Oh, for those who might be interested, it is highly possible that Hitler did have one child, conceived during WW1.

how does ken burns stack up in comparison?
I take most documentaries with a grain of salt.
I saw one recently about jfk's assassination and the guy maintained he had evidence that it was an accident. Friendly fire. secret service dude in the car behind him in the motorcade whose assault rifle accidentally went off while raising it in order to return fire. There were pictures of him with the gun and everything. Truly fascinating, albeit somewhat far fetched.
Thus I may just watch this hitlers children thingie, but not for the sake of having a life changing historical revelation...

Burns is a different kind of documentary maker. He goes for the big picture but relies on experts to give their opinions. Shelby Foote, for example, more or less carried the Civil War series and gave it a gravitas it would not otherwise have had. The History Channel appears not to give a damn about historical accuracy, although major book publishers are no better.

Foote was awesome.
Wouldn't give autographs. But he worked with my father in a professional capacity and my mom (a history major) ended up with an autographed book. Good stuff.

Yep, awesome writer. I was in the first wave of 50 allowed into his estate sale and came away with some autographed stuff, and some stuff autographed TO him, not by him, from other famous authors.

That JFK secret service friendly fire thing is bogus. There isn't one photo, video or witness that places any agent with a gun drawn during that rain of fire. Besides, the fatal shot came from the right front.

I visited Daley Plaza years ago and it is creeply exactly the same and the 1000's of pictures. I went up on the grassy knoll and the behind the fence. It was written on the fence, "The real shooter stood here." There is a rail road track right there and the shooter allegedly caught a train and left. Incidentally the motorcade route was changed that morning to include the stroll through Daley Plaza.

They had a picture of a secret service man with an assault rifle drawn in the documentary. I don't claim to say that it is real or fake. Either way it is interesting.
I watched this one last night. 1PM Central Standard Time. Documentary on Cronkite's coverage of the Kennedy death. Pretty interesting angle. Back when the press wanted to not only be first, but also right... (a damn rare thing THESE days...)

I just love a movie with a happy ending.
