Tuberville's vacation a sign of confidence in UC
Tuberville's vacation a sign of confidence in UC
Tom Groeschen, tgroeschen@enquirer.com 3:14 p.m. EDT July 27, 2014

This summer, Tommy Tuberville took some vacation for the first time in several years. That is a reflection on how pleased Tuberville is with the state of his University of Cincinnati football program.

"It's just the simple fact that I didn't have time to get away," the UC coach said. "Starting a program is hard. We started one at Texas Tech (2010) and then here last year. We're so much more comfortable now, knowing where we want this program to go."

Tuberville starts his second UC season this year, with players reporting Aug. 10 for practice. Workouts begin Aug. 11 at Higher Ground Conference & Retreat Center in West Harrison, Ind., the Bearcats' annual camp site.

First, Tuberville and athletic director Mike Bohn will lead the UC contingent to American Athletic Conference media days Monday-Tuesday in Newport, Rhode Island. Monday features the annual golf outing and seaside clambake, with the preseason league media poll to be announced Tuesday.

Running back/receiver Ralph David Abernathy IV, quarterback Munchie Legaux, linebacker Nick Temple and defensive back Adrian Witty also will appear at media days.

UC went 9-4 last year and finished third in the AAC (6-2 league record). The Bearcats lost 39-17 to North Carolina in the Belk Bowl.

Sophomore Gunner Kiel is No. 1 on the quarterback depth chart, with Brendon Kay having exhausted his eligibility. Kiel, who transferred from Notre Dame last year, was the nation's No. 1-rated quarterback while in high school in Columbus, Ind.

Junior college transfer Jarred Evans also could get some playing time at quarterback. Fifth-year senior Munchie Legaux continues to rehab from a severe knee injury, which ended his 2013 season after two games. Tuberville rates Legaux at about 80 percent physically.

"Obviously Gunner's gonna be the guy, but Jarred Evans is the guy that I brought in to be the Munchie for this year, to be a run-around guy to make plays," Tuberville said. "If Munchie plays, he may take some plays away from Jarred. He's ahead of schedule."

UC returns its top three rushers in Abernathy (518 yards, five TDs), Hosey Williams (655 yards, four TDs) and Tion Green (412 yards, seven TDs). Williams enters camp as the No. 1 back, but Tuberville said the competition remains open.

"We're looking for a standout running back," Tuberville said. "Tion Green … it's time for Tion to step up and be the man that he can be."

Shaq Washington, who led the team with 78 catches last year, leads a deep corps of receivers. Washington recently made the Biletnikoff Award watch list, which honors the nation's top receiver.

Defensive end Silverberry Mouhon (Lombardi Award,), left tackle Eric Lefeld (Outland Trophy) and center Deyshawn Bond (Rimington Award) also made preseason watch lists.

SEASON OPENER: UC opens Sept. 12 against Toledo (7 p.m.) at Paul Brown Stadium. The Bearcats have two open dates to begin the season, and Tuberville is not happy about it.

"You never want to open that late," Tuberville said. "Unfortunately, some of the guys that previously did the scheduling just didn't get the job done. The ball was dropped a few years ago on this year's schedule. It is what it is."

I like where he flat out said Gunner Kiel is the #1 guy.

I also like calling out the screwup of the schedule.

Couldn't agree more! I love the challenge from CTT and at six foot and 220 pounds Tion providing some consistent power running between the tackles would be a good compliment to the speedier Williams and RDAIV.

Agree. Until he's cleared medically to resume full contact it remains to be seen what he can provide the team. Wishing him well as he continues to rehab and make it back...

I hope like hell that Munchie doesn't get any snaps, but I have been saying that now for 3 years.

It's nice to see some depth at key positions - something we haven't had in a while.

I'm sure Kiel will perform to his potential this year and we, finally, may have a big back that can produce a running game along with a deep group of receivers. This offense has a lot of potential and I'm looking forward to seeing them.

If the offensive line pans out this year, I think we have the potential to wear down a defense with Hosea and Tion. Softening up a defense can only be a good thing for Gunnar.

I know it is a cliche and it is trite but true: It all starts up front, both offense and defense.

I really hope he does. In my mind, it means two things.

#1 He is healthy enough to play. He has worked his arse off after a devastating injury. The college years are fleeting, it would make for a great memory/story for the kid.

#2 It means Gunner just dropped 400yds and 5TDs on some chumps and has his feet kicked up on the sidelines! 02-13-banana

Based on the article, it sounds as if Munchie gets minutes it will be at the expense of Jared, not Gunner.

Love how Tuberville called out Tion Green. Hopefully this just provided some motivation for Tion and he has a special season. We are going to need production out of the backfield.

Tion needs to learn the blocking schemes. Last year he couldn't be trusted to pick up the blitz, so he didn't get that many snaps. It's up to him.

Heard he also has a case of the butterfingers - but yes his PT was based on trust. He coughed up a potential coffin-nail TD in the SMU game last year, as they were driving to put the game away.

That was his lone fumble all season. Is he coughing it up that much in practice?

UC NEEDS Tion to step it up...kids has the tools. Just needs to put it all together. He could be a BEAST for us.
