Quote:More Big Ten games coming to Yankee Stadium?

Jeremy Fowler / College Football Insider

July 26, 2014 04:30 PM

Showcasing its three East Coast members in Yankee Stadium makes too much sense for the Big Ten, which has a bowl agreement with the Pinstripe Bowl and has opened an office in Manhattan.

Would Penn State, Maryland and Rutgers play in The Bronx, possibly against each other? Big Ten Network president Mark Silverman seems intrigued by the idea.

The network plans to implement creating programming for new Big Ten markets such as New York and Washington, D.C.

"Like with Yankee Stadium -- would there be a case where Rutgers or Penn State or Maryland, would they want to move a game to an iconic stadium like that?" Silverman said. "You could bring in, for Rutgers, probably another 10 to 15,000 people there. Is that a game that makes sense to move there? Probably."

Rutgers already plays Army in 2015 in Yankee Stadium and is open to future games there.

Neutral-site games aren't going away because the payouts are too good and conferences can get a de facto home game without returning the favor in a home-and-home.

In theory, I love the idea of games in Yankee Stadium, but put the odds fairly small. While the Big Ten Network might love it, both teams have to agree to give up a home game to do that. Penn State, especially I can't see it from; they have too much revenue generation from home games. That would leave Maryland and Rutgers against each other and I just don't see it as likely there either.

Rutgers won't go for it since we move from Rutgers Stadium at 52.5K seats to Yankee Stadium which with added bleachers gets you to maybe 57K seats. And then we somehow don't likely make that much more money from it.

If what moves the needle for the game is the added profile, wouldn't Penn State would be more interested in lifting their profile in Phillie than in lifting their profile in New York?

StatePenn doesn't have to raise its profile in Philly or NYC. If it did want to play in the NY market, it would have to be at the Meadowlands. Yankee Stadium is far too small to make loosing a home game worth while.

Rutgers has played in two Pinstripe Bowls and already played Army regular season at Yankee Stadium. We will play Army there again. I could see us playing a neutral site there vs BCU/cuse/pits or UConn.

Maybe the B10 could get the ACC to agree to an early season football challenge. It would feature the Northern ACC schools vs the second tier B10 schools. They all could use raising their profiles in the New York market and a 50,000 seat stadium would be perfect size for say UVa vs Purdue.

I'm not a huge fan of it myself, but we said we'd be a good partner to the Big Ten when we got in so if we had to play a game at Yankee Stadium or JetLife Stadium every few years for a special occasion then that's fine.

Yankee Stadium is not ideal for football but I actually think it makes for a really cool backdrop for the game. Plus it's great for those of us who live in NYC.

You make it sound like Rutgers would be doing the B1G Ten a "big" favor by playing in Yankee Stadium, that's hilarious.

I'm also not a fan of playing at a crappy baseball stadium but it's the media market the B1G wanted and the New Jersey program was primarily picked to give the B1G access to NYC. It certainly wasn't chosen because of its athletic dominance and long standing history of winning football and fan support.

First of all, who said otherwise?

Secondly, it may be possible that the Big 10 would want to feature some of their larger programs on a bigger stage with a neutral site game in the NY area. Obviously RU would make the most sense as an opponent. This was discussed at some length during the entire realignment process. Because RU (and most other schools) would prefer to play on campus, then yes, they would be doing the league a favor by playing, say, PSU at MetLife or some such.

RE: More Big Ten games coming to Yankee Stadium?
Rutgers did not and is not providing the B1G Ten a favor. The B1G did Rutgers a huge favor.

If Rutgers were given the ultimatum to play every single home game at Yankee Stadium or MetLife in order to be admitted to the B1G, the school's administration, athletic department, alumni association and school partners would've jumped through a hoop of fire as many times as requested. What was the alternative? The New Big East, aka old school CUSA? Going Indy? Begging to gain access to the ACC?

It's pretty clear that the B1G added Rutgers after much thought in order to gain access to the NYC TV and media markets. Rutgers opened a chocolate bar containing Golden Ticket, be happy. Welcome to the Promise Land.

You're not really a nuanced thinker are you?

I'm not even sure to whom you are responding.

Every Rutgers fan knows that, but thank you for pointing out the obvious.

Actually Waterloo, considering the number of TV sets in New Jersey compared to the great state of Iowa, you should be greatful to have us. The increase in BTN revenue from ComCast, TWC and CableVision was how much for your school? You're welcome

Now consider the number of recruits in all sports that the schools in the B10 West take out of the new East cost markets. If anything you guys should be the ones begging to come play neutral site games at Yankee Stadium. After all you will now have to compete for NY, NJ, Pa and Md recruits against two new local ACC schools and Two new local B10 schools. There is much less incentive now for a big time local prospect to go play at any Children of the Corn school when he/she can stay local and still play at the P5 level.

Hey there little buddy, I'm replying directly to your posts.

It's really not that nuanced, you think Rutgers would be doing a favor for the B1G Conference by potentially playing a home game in NYC. That's taking one for the team? I don't think so.

Wasn't that the reason the conference picked that program from its dumpster-fire future in the first place? It's proximity to NYC? I mean the Scarlet Knights carry the NYC market, right? Right . . . The media market and alumni of the existing B1G schools was more likely the reason.

Sorry for my anger, it's just not that exciting of an addition for a lot of us longtime B1G fans. Adding a football powerhouse like Rutgers with their massive fan base and 6th place finish in the American Conference isn't all that impressive. Maybe that will change.

They sure as hell were no Penn State or Nebraska add.

As mentioned in another thread, I'll be watching and pulling for your program when the Wash. State game rolls around.

Good luck.

Why on earth would you be "angry"? I mea, really? You're angry?

You're sitting here taking shots at Rutgers for what reason?

It makes no sense to me. Maybe you should go outside for awhile, dude. Get some air.

More television sets? Well now . . . that's where all your fans have been these past decades. Good thing we now have them in the fold to watch the BTN. Thank you couch potato Rutgers fans!

There is no comparison between the programs really, Iowa has more money, more big bowl games, more bowl wins, more fans and the program includes a large chunk of the Chicago market as its fan base. You wouldn't know that though because you're a newbie.

You know little of Iowa Athletics, its Chicago market and probably not a whole lot more about the B1G just yet. Welcome aboard, enjoy the ride and your great fortune.

Good luck and see you around little brother.

There's nothing iconic about Yankee Stadium. The iconic building was knocked down a long time ago. The current stadium isn't even on the original Yankee Stadium footprint.

The sightlines are terrible, parking is not cheap, The nearby teams sell well for their games and have similar or greater capacity than Yankee Stadium. The game will air locally anyway.

I do not get why Yankee Stadium CFB games do anything for anyone besides the Yankees and the City of NY.

Is it possible that a Yankee Stadium game would draw a larger TV audience. Northwestern draws a larger TV audience for games the Cats play at Wrigley Field.

I think that does hold true so far. But play enough games there and there's at least 1 more Rutgers @ Army matchup and plus the annual Pinstripe Bowl I feel like the boost TV will get diminishes more and more. Plus its a brand new stadium (that frankly feels more like a cross between a casino, an enclosed shopping mall and a DC monument than a ballpark) that sits across the street from the old stadium. You want a really nice, classic but modern ballpark feel head to Flushing and go to Citi Field. Ironically, Citi Field would be better able to accommodate a football game because the playing surface is bigger.
