Population Center Receives New $180 Million Grant

UNC’s Carolina Population Center has received a five-year, $180 million award for its MEASURE Evaluation project, evaluating health, poverty and gender programs worldwide.

The award, from the U.S. Agency for International Development, is the second-largest ever received by the University and supports the fourth phase of an effort begun in 1997.

In 2008, the population center also attracted the University’s largest award ever, for the third phase of the massive project that supports public health efforts throughout the world, particularly addressing HIV and AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis.

With possible associate awards from USAID missions and bureaus in other countries, the total award could grow to more than $300 million.

“MEASURE Evaluation has played a key role in an incredibly successful international effort to bend the epidemic curve. The global community has taken what was an upward trajectory for AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis and turned it into a downward one,” Project Director Jim C. Thomas, Ph.D., an associate professor of epidemiology in UNC’s Gillings School of Global Public Health, said in a statement. “As we continue to address global health issues, we are honored to be entrusted by USAID to carry on the work of MEASURE Evaluation, and we look forward to a strong partnership with USAID for years to come.”

Chancellor Carol Folt said MEASURE Evaluation has received nearly $600 million in federal funding over the last 17 years.

“This funding is a direct result of the talented and hard-working team of researchers, faculty and students behind the project,” she said.

To date, MEASURE Evaluation has focused on building the foundations and capacity to enable monitoring and evaluation in developing countries. The goal of Phase IV is to sustain that work and strengthen systems in the host countries to provide the best information for those deciding health care policy.

I think that is great. Maybe they will add a passive form of population control to the study so that we don't have to face the other looming crisis, starvation and which is directly impacting the increase of pollution, deforestation, and the rape of the world's oceans.

Not sure what you have in mind, JR, but basically all of the Population-Models currently project that world-population will start to decline in the 2040s or 2050s.
So, if "over-population" is a problem, well then it's a problem that will truly begin to solve itself in the next generation.

I'm getting long in the tooth and have heard that argument for decades. I'll believe it "if I live to see it", but I would be a zombie for sure if I did. The only model I see us utilizing is the Easter Island approach. Unless of course the sustained use of plastics and their inappropriate disposal into the environment raises the estrogen levels in the human body to a degree that drives impotence to record heights (which of course is kind of an oxymoron symbolically speaking).

I wonder why UNC decided to jump ahead of the curve on that one?

I assure you H1, that we would have been out in front of this one even if there had been no scandal.

Except for the fact you aren't out in front on this

From your very article

Quote:Several schools have similar programs, with Kirschner citing Georgia Tech, Syracuse and Michigan. Ohio State began its program in 1994, while UNC's neighbor North Carolina State started its "Reconnect" program in 2008.

Indiana recently unveiled an athlete bill of rights that included a program paying for the tuition plus books and fees for an undergraduate degree for any scholarship athlete who was eligible at least two seasons.

Yeah I saw that. You're talking about what ... 6 other schools amongst the hundred plus other schools in D1. That's pretty much out in front of a trend. I'll say this: you're consistent.

No, they all did that before it became obvious that everyone else was just about to do the same thing. UNC is trying to make it look like they are doing this all on their own instead of waiting a few months for the autonomy council to pass such rules. When that happens these actions would basically be mandatory.

When the other schools on the list did this they did it all on their own.

This isn't a personal attack when I say that this comes off purely as a PR stunt by North Carolina.

UNC has been working on this program for at least two years even though they hadn't publicly announced it up until now . It's one of several initiatives the University will implement in the near future. UNC also plans to cover all of the need based aid of every student(making it one of the few if not only public institution to do so)
