In a perfect world.....
The idea here is to create conferences based on geography, natural rivalries, and similar culture, ignoring all pre-existing conditions beyond that. Each conference either 9 teams or 16 with 4 pods, lending itself to ending a playoff without extending the number of games (each conference is mandated to play a division championship and then a conference championship). 9 team conferences declare an individual champion without the game. 9 and 16 are by far the easiest to do scheduling.

Atlantic Coast Conference
Miami
Florida
Florida State
Central Florida

Georgia ... man it hurt to do that
Georgia Tech
Clemson
South Carolina

Wake Forest
Duke
North Carolina
NC State

Virginia
Virginia Tech
Maryland
Navy

New England Conference
Syracuse
Buffalo
UMASS
Boston College
UCONN
Army
Rutgers
Temple
Villanova

Gulf Coast Conference
Auburn
Alabama
Troy
South Alabama

Memphis
Southern Miss
Ole Miss
Miss State

Tennessee
Vanderbilt
Kentucky
Louisville

LSU
Tulane
Arkansas
Arkansas State

Texas Conference
Rice
Houston
Texas State
UTSA

Texas A&M
Baylor
Texas
Texas Tech

SMU
TCU
UTEP
New Mexico State

North Texas
Oklahoma
Oklahoma State
Tulsa

Great Lakes Conference
Michigan
Michigan State
Ohio State
Notre Dame

Indiana
Purdue
Illinois
Northwestern

Wisconsin
Iowa
Iowa State
Minnesota

Pittsburgh
Penn State
West Virginia
Cincinnati

Central Conference
North Dakota
North Dakota State
South Dakota
South Dakota State

Kansas
Kansas State
Nebraska
Missouri

Wyoming
Colorado
Colorado State
Air Force

Utah
Utah State
BYU
Weber State

Pacific Coast Conference
Washington
Washington State
Idaho
Eastern Washington

Oregon
Oregon State
Boise State
Nevada

California
Stanford
San Jose State
Fresno State

UCLA
Southern Cal
San Diego State
Hawaii

UNLV
Arizona
Arizona State
New Mexico

At first glance you'd have a secondary conference of 9 in the greater southeast, and a secondary conference of 9 in the greater great lakes.

I look forward to hearing how this is all a bunch of a bull****, everything is completely wrong, and your lengthy explanations for why is it wrong dealing with history and tradition and ignoring what could be and your own self-imposed caps of what (insert school here) could be.

04-cheers

Not including East Carolina and somehow including...the Dakotas, and Weber State?

That's trolling at its finest right here

New York is not New England. In fact just 3 of the programs in that conference are from New England states. And for the record with the exception of BC, Syracuse hates every single one of those FB programs.

And why the F*** would you give us Nova/Temple but not PSU/Pitt.

You would be in the secondary conference in the greater southeast mentioned in OP. I lost interest in detailing exact make out when I finished the west coast (it is difficult to keep it cohesive in a few spots, namely where the Great Lakes transition into the Great Plains (lots and lots of teams to very few) and dealing with no mans land between Texas and California.

I'm not saying it wouldn't have an auto-bid to a playoff .... it would have just the same automatic access as everybody else.

Fine... Northeastern Conference.

PSU/Pitt are geographically and culturally more at home outside of NE.

You talk about a cultural home while leaving syracuse in a conference without west virginia, Pitt, & PSU?

Syracuse total games played:

Penn State: 71

WVU: 60

BC: 47
Rutgers: 43
Temple: 37
Army: 21
UCONN: 9
Buffalo: 8
UMASS: 0

You've played Penn State 3 times since 1990. I contend all three of those top teams are historical accidents. Like I said at the bottom of my original post ... I look forward to your yelling how wrong I am based upon, among other things, history. :)

RE: In a perfect world.....
So let me get this straight. North Dakota, South Dakota, ND State, and SD State as well as Weber State are in the "big" conferences, but bigger schools that have actually accomplished something are stuck in a "secondary conference" because of geographics? You've got an entire division of a conference dedicated to the Dakotas?

I just find that ridiculous - but in fairness that's why this method just would never work in reality. I'd love to find a way to make this work but it's impossible.

We don't play PSU that often because of their 2 for 1 home/away demands. It is not because the two schools don't like each other, it's PSU being typical PSU.

And FYI that is an extremely selective stat, our "3x since 1990" is also "3x since 2008"

do you really want me to bring up that PSU last played WVU in 1992 and Pitt in 2000?

"You just keep thinking Butch, that's what your good at.", but leave the SEC the hell alone! I noticed that you set up a compatible peer group for the ACC area but buggered up the Gulf coast and other regions.

Yeah that's why I am pissed.

The Big Ten & SEC don't get forced into a G5 based conference but Syracuse & Colorado do?

I'd sleep with one eye open GTS if I were you.......

I'm sorry, but there's just no football conference in the Carolinas that's configured solely on geographics that doesn't include ECU. Same goes for Florida and USF.

He also included every FCS program of note in the west + all 4 dakota schools. Yet didn't include Montana which is one of the most FBS ready programs in the region.

What do Syracuse and Colorado have in common? Few P5 programs in their area.
