RE: Daily Press...total lack of ODU coverage
Exceptional article. We may be witnessing the next Joe Montana. Similar calm exterior, similar body frame and similar playing style. Those are HUMONGOUS shoes to compare anyone with, and dissimilarity is the fact Joe was the starting quarterback at Notre Dame. Of course it was a national championship caliber team playing against the same level competition. Yet, Joe was as humble as they came, had incredible field vision, along with amazing scrabbling ability. The two remind me somewhat of each other with actual results on the field.

RE: Daily Press...total lack of ODU coverage
It's possible that enough people complained to get them to amp up their coverage, but that sort of thing is usually planned out weeks in advance. It's therefore possible that they always intended to increase their ODU story count as the season got closer, though you think they'd be more forthcoming about it to people who complained -- "hey, chill for a few days, you'll be glad you did".

Someone a few pages back mentioned Richmond coverage. That's going to be a tougher nut to crack. In theory, the Times-Dispatch and TV stations should pay more attention to ODU football now that it's in FBS, but there's probably more JMU and W&M alumni (and more influential W&M alumni) in the RVA, so there's ground to make up there. Plus, again, fewer bodies in the newsroom. The T-D used to cover pretty much every Division I football game in the state; now the only schools they'll cover every week without fail are UR, Virginia and Va. Tech. It'll probably have close to the same presence there that VCU basketball and East Carolina football have here.

After you have clicked on the different articles and enjoyed reading them one way to show our appreciation would be to leave a short comment on each of the columns. It would be a fantastic demonstration of Monarch Nation’s support for their coverage and recognition.

just a thought.

Here's a story about the ODU and Hampton game. We are the two closest D1 schools to the Daily Press.

RE: Daily Press...total lack of ODU coverage
It seems to me that the Daily Press has stepped up their ODU coverage recently. Maybe it's just that games are being played, but maybe our complaining on this thread hit a nerve. In any event, they're averaging 2-3 stories a week now, which is greatly appreciated. It's not so much that they're adding anything new to Harry's coverage, it's more that they're helping us promote ODU on the other side of the tunnel.

Again...not one mention of our home game against FAU in the Daily Press today. What a sorry excuse of a newspaper. They do everything possible to keep the divide between the peninsula and south side. They reported other games that started at 7. So start time is not an excuse.

Paper version .....they have a habit of publishing online and not in print. We will see if it shows up tomorrow.

Not in the paper. I couldn't even find the score of our game and the VCU game got an article.

Yep...I looked in the paper because I was going to buy the Sunday paper. When I saw no article ....I put it back. Daily Press can go bankrupt for all I care. These jokers have no idea how to build a customer base.

RE: Daily Press...total lack of ODU coverage
I'd be curious to see the demographics of people who are upset vs those who don't care about coverage of ODU (or anything else) in the local newspapers.

I wouldn't be surprised of those who care have used the newspaper as a primary source for their news for a significant portion of their life, where as those who don't care have used the internet as their primary source, and the latter group is getting bigger while the former is getting smaller. I can't even remember the last time I bought a newspaper, yet alone read one on a regular basis.

Both the Pilot and the Daily Press could provide daily coverage 365 days a year of ODU basketball, and I still wouldn't buy a copy because chances are any article worth a damn will be able to be found online.

Newspapers, outside of maybe the major metro papers, are dying for the same reason that VCRs and cassettes did, there is a better more efficient tool that has been developed.

I know that you are right, but I still truly enjoy reading the printed version every morning with a cup of coffee.

RE: Daily Press...total lack of ODU coverage
An ODU professor that taught a synchronous online class with a live studio audience told me a funny story. He said a student came up to him after class and told him that she really enjoyed the class when she was watching from a remote site. She said, "When I am remote I can spread out and get my cup and coffee and as you teach and I can relax and pull out the newspaper and skim through articles....."
He was like... "Um, Do you know who you are talking to?"
