RE: Nationals at Reds
It's not hot vs. cold, it's just the accumulation of injuries and half the team playing outside of their roles. Now the pitchers are trying to be perfect in everything they do because they know the offense just isn't going to be there on a nightly basis. That's not something you want your pitching staff to be attempting.

Absolutely correct. The injuries have made the situation 1000 times worse, but Walt has been consistently building teams that attempt to win 1-0.

I understand your point. My point was it is exact opposite in terms of extremes in wins and losses. You would hope they could play .500 ball instead of 1-8. Injuries are a part of it but everyone seems to be slumping at the same time. Hamilton, Frazier and Mez have not been the same and Jay Bruce still has not shown up. No injuries to those players. Again, we've still got the second half to go but all the momentum gained before the break has been lost.

RE: Nationals at Reds
This team came into the year with only two established hitters that they could count on. One has been injured most of the year and the other has been flat out awful. Thankfully Frazier, Mes, and Hamilton greatly exceeded reasonable expectations in the first half but the only long term formula of offensive success is Votto and Bruce hitting the way the back of their baseball card says they should.

Votto makes everyone better. Everyone. Same applies to Phillips, albeit at a lesser degree. There's a reason they were still running Votto out there on one leg.

The momentum was lost when Phillips went down. As I said before, they could still compete without Votto if everyone else picked up the slack, but to do so without him and Phillips is impossible. Too many guys playing out of position or outside of their intended roles. Pitching and defense were keeping this team in the race, and since those two guys left the everyday lineup, defensive miscues have cost them games.

Completely agree on Votto. Runners on base puts pressure on the pitcher and creates opportunities for everyone. Phillips doesn't make anyone better, he's a chronically low OBP hitter so he's not creating opportunities for anyone else. He has an awful approach at the plate so no one is learning anything from his ABs. He's better than what's replacing him but certainly isn't a difference maker offensively.

Let's face it, the team has been destroyed by injuries the entire year. It was a miracle they were within 2 games at the All-Star break. When you don't have Votto and Phillips in the lineup, there's really nothing you can do other than watch the season fade away.

Great post Coop 04-bow Regarding Phillips, I have seen a lot of guys complain about him. For a bit of perspective, FS1 did a great job comparing him to Morgan, and he pretty much checked out in most categories. Give me someone close to Joe at 2B, and I'm delighted.

I'm skeptical of this comparison (even as someone who really likes BP). Their power numbers are similar enough as both are .427 in career slugging percentage (this obviously is non-adjusted). Morgan OBPed .392 for his career. Phillips has never OBPed over .352 and is .319 for his career. Joe Morgan stole 689 bases in his career and did it at an insane 81 percent clip. Phillips has 160 stolen bases and is successful at a 71% clip. This is decently efficient baserunning as you need to be successful about 2/3 of the time for stealing to be even worth it, but it is far less efficient than Morgan and done a ton less than Morgan.

Fangraphs sadly does not have Advanced fielding numbers for Joe Morgan, but everything I've read is that his fielding was great. Phillips has been a great fielder as well. Assuming that is a wash, Phillips and Morgan would be similar fielders with similar power, but Morgan was significantly better in the most important hitting skill and an historically great baserunner.

You can really see the difference in WAR where BP's best ever season he had a 5.6 WAR, but has generally been about a 3 WAR player for his best season.s Morgan has 6 seasons where his WAR was better than BP's best, including an insane 5 season stretch where he had WARS of 8.7, 9.5, 8.6, 11 (yikes) and 9.5. Simply put, Joe Morgan is one of the best 2nd basemanto ever play the game (along with Hornsby, Collins and Robinson).

OK, good point. But Phillips is still nothing to complain about.

I wasn't referring to just offense. The best defense in the league has collapsed since he went on the DL. When he's on the field, he gets to balls that nobody else can and makes incredible plays every single day. Offensively his absence is noticeable too, if for no other reason than the guys he's been replaced with.
