Well if he had called wouldn't he be quoting them instead of recycling another reporters depth chart?

He should just start calling you and Hoeky. Then he'd have the inside scoop on everything. And would be making his bowl game plans now.

How did I get dragged into this?

Although, Dip has already nailed it on everything.

I stand by my statement, liking David and appreciating his coverage. Not sure why you guys don't like him. I will take any quality, professional media coverage of WMU.

Especially when our football program is on the downside. I wouldn't expect much in depth coverage of a coach and program coming off of a 1-11 season. All that effort and nobody will read it because it's just not interesting to anyone other than a handful of people who would attend their practices and blog (or web board post if you will) about them.

Or look at the alternative. We could get ZERO coverage. At least DD is trying to give us something.

And then during the season to have his coverage buried on page 3 or 4 while UofM and MSU dominate the first 2 pages. As the local guy covering the local team, that would get infuriating.

No ill will against David intended, but there is plenty of other very solid coverage out there besides MLive, trust me. In a way, it's disrespectful to all of the others out there that spend time covering the team. I can think of about a half-dozen other professional journalists/writers out there off the top of my head that I get solid, quality information from on WMU sports on a consistent basis. MLive isn't the only one out there.

I would like a list of those professional journalists. I honestly only see DD out there, any more info would be welcomed.

In all seriousness, could I get a list of those journalists/writers/etc as well?

Because I'd love to read their stuff if it in fact helps shed more light on our program. And I'm not aware of them.

Kind of like eating at a restaurant and giving it rave reviews because you didn't get food poisoning.

USA Today, Lindys, Phil Steele, Rivals before they all left all had/ have more in depth coverage. In most of their cases they're covering hundreds of teams and it's still better.

Furthermore DD is 5 minutes from WMU, he COULD have better access then he has. Gazette sports coverage can't hold a candle to the Battle Creek Enquire & News, a paper that at one time was like the Weekly Reader in comparison.

I got sick of paying for the Gazette just so my wife could cut coupons and browse the fliers. Im tired of defending minimal sports coverage because DDs editor is a cheapskate. I'm sure Dave can call the Athletic Dept.any day and can afford the drive to Waldo. But because he shows up here once in awhile he gets a free pass.

It's not that hard to find them -- especially with the internet these days -- but here are a few to get you started:

Ed Kengerski and Andy Pepper, Channel 3
Colin Windecker and Carolyn Binder (both recently left, but they did some great stuff with WKZO)
Brandon Folson (was doing a lot of in-depth stuff but recently took a job up north - Gaylord, I think?)
Brandon Fitzsimons and the Hustle Belt staff
There's a new guy at Fox 17 that's been doing some good stuff
There's a kid from the Battle Creek Enquirer that does a nice job. I think his name is Nick something...
Mike Rogers with BroncoBlitz
All the interns and part-time staff at WMU athletics do a nice job.
The Western Herald occasionally sends writers but they've been a disgrace the last couple of years IMO...

These are just the ones off the top of my head.

And all of these people are doing more in depth coverage on WMU Football than David? Come on man!!!

I've seen exactly ZERO since last fall from Ed and Andy. They will have a few 15 second blurbs in the newscast once camp opens and 30 seconds of highlights once the season starts.

Those 2 on WKZO didn't to ANY great stuff, let along cover WMU Football. And how is simply discussing them, "in depth"?

The next 3 or 4 I have either never heard of or don't know where they were. Maybe they were awesome. But I have no idea who they even are.

Mike at BroncoBlitz does a good job, I agree.

Interns and Athletic staff? And exactly where do they share their in depth information?

Sorry, but I would say that all of those outlets combined give us less information than David does. Which is saying a lot.

I agree with you on the Gazette in general. I cancelled my subscription years ago as well. It was a waste of paper and money.

We are going to agree to disagree on this one I guess. Could DD and MLive give us more? Probably. But I still feel that its more than anywhere else is giving us or even attempting to.

I was under the impression that we were going to find out about a half dozen solid sources, this list is hardly solid with many mentioned having left, and the others debatable as quality sources of info at best. I don't think it's an insult to anyone to say DD is our best source right now.

Especially in such a down time for our program. Like I said, it's not news if no one cares or reads the story, it's dead space.

Reminds me of when go through the McDonalds drive thru, they screw up the order, and I have to go through again to get it right. I get pissed, and my wife says, "They're not paid much, what do you expect?"

Well let's see. The Gazette reduced the size of the paper, reduced coverage, pretty much stopped doing feature articles, AND RAISED THE PRICE.

Yet, like my wife we act as if the status quo is all we should expect.

He's so great the SID didn't even invite him to NSD set up in Fleck's office. Invited the Freep, Rivals, and the BC Enquire though.

If you like bare bones coverage it's great.

And please, you haven't lived here in decades. You have no idea what we once had and what we now have.

What do you mean? I live in Northville!

Plus I think when we have had good internet access since the early nineties it really doesn't matter where you live.

The Gazette wasn't even on the net 5 years ago. And even now what we get is collection of syndicated articles and a small amount of local bare bones coverage.
