Very funny story why SRI had to buy it

For one thing, it's the only corner on that block that they didn't own.

During the 1950s, its basement was the headquarters for the Birmingham chapter of the US Communist Party, and was constantly being raided at night by the police.

Really cool old building, hope they do something neat with it.

Back when I worked at SRI it was a real flea bag. The kind of place you'd cross the street to avoid walking directly in front of.

I hate to think what it would cost to gut it and renovate it right. I just love the old dump.
