Nearly a month after the University of Cincinnati's Sean Kilpatrick was overlooked in the draft despite being a first-team all-American, his agent remains confident that he will end up playing in the NBA.

"There's a reason he was an All-American," said Zach Curtin, who works for Chicago-based Priority Sports and Entertainment. "He's one of those guys who could be hidden in plain sight. When the dust settles, he'll have a good opportunity with an NBA team."

Because of his experience and physical maturity, Kilpatrick will be attractive to international teams when they begin to offer contracts to American players, Curtin said, but added, "It would have to be a good international deal for him because we think he's an NBA guy."

Kilpatrick did nothing to change Curtin's mind while playing the past few weeks for the Philadelphia 76ers entry in the NBA's Las Vegas Summer League, where he averaged 11.5 points in six games in an average of 20.3 minutes per game. He made 26 of 59 shots from the field for 44 percent and was 9 for 29 from 3-point range for 31 percent.

With the summer league competition over, Kilpatrick is in a holding pattern as the NBA teams assess their needs.

"I'm just waiting right now," Kilpatrick said. "I'm going off what my agent is telling me. I think I'm honestly getting a lot of good feedback on what I've done in the summer league. Hopefully teams will bite on that."

Because he played for the 76ers' summer league team, both Kilpatrick and his agent believe Philadelphia is his best hope at this point.

"They love me and I love them," Kilpatrick said. "They like the way I played. I'm pretty sure they have a better feel for me than anyone because I was with them for the past month and a half."

Curtin says he still doesn't understand why Kilpatrick wasn't drafted. The 6-foot-4 guard from Yonkers, N.Y., finished his college career as the second-leading scorer in UC history behind Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson with 2,145 points and helped UC to four straight NCAA Tournaments, including a Sweet 16 appearance in 2012.

Kilpatrick spent five years at UC, one as a redshirt freshman after playing a year in prep school. Even though it allowed him to develop into a better player, Curtin said Kilpatrick's decision to stay in school might have hurt him in an era when most top NBA prospects leave college after a year or two.

"We talk about it every day," Curtin said. "One thing is it's the stigma of being a four-year senior. I think Sean made an incredible decision to go back (to UC for his senior year), but it's something that's held against him. I think NBA teams like that big ball of clay to work with and they throw around the word 'upside' a lot. The truth is some guys don't develop the way they envision them."

Kilpatrick is 24 years old, several years older than most NBA rookies. Curtin theorized that might also have hurt him in the draft. But he believes Kilpatrick's age will be an advantage for many of the pro teams overseas, who look for more physically mature players.

"You can leverage that interest against an NBA team," Curtin said. "If there's really a good offer for him overseas, that puts pressure on the NBA teams."

Kilpatrick admits he was disappointed when he wasn't drafted and said it took him about three days to get over it.

"That's every kid's dream, to get drafted," he said. "The teams that didn't draft me, they obviously thought I didn't have what it took to be on their team. That's something I can't control. I just have to continue to keep being me."

"It's a credit to him," Curtin said. "He recovered. A lot of guys would just kind of shrivel up and be upset about it but he wasn't. Once we told him where he was going (to play in the summer league) he was excited about the opportunity and performed very well.

"He's a kid with a lot of pride. That pride and confidence in himself translates into his game. He thinks he can be on the court with anyone. And he can."

The unfortunate fact is that SK is a guy with no professional experience who is older than nearly 45% of the NBA. That's not a good equation for making a team that is firmly in rebuild mode.

I get questioning his athleticism, but can't you just factor his age into his contact? If he can help you right now, sign him. Just make it a shorter term deal and keep your eye out for your next 2 guard...if he proves himself then you won't need to. He is almost like getting a cheap low-mid level freel agent.

I would think sk's work ethic would be important for a team in rebuild mode with young players.

I don't think the age argument is such a detriment. I doubt he'll have much transitioning difficulties, he is who he is. They're not going to try and transition him. They saw how he wasn't shook in Vegas, he'll settle in to the speed and schedule of the NBA. That's not much of a transition compared to someone who hasn't had years to develop past AAU ball. He knows what it is to play on a team, he had to play way beyond his expected role in college and beyond that, all signing a 24 year old says, is that by the time he's due for his second max contract, he'll be 33 and you can let him walk. Big deal...

Work ethic only gets you so far. He's pretty much tapped out physically-speaking, isn't a great shooter and his ball-handling isn't where it needs to be for a NBA guard. NBA teams place a great deal of value on potential. While he may be better than other guys just out of college that are currently available, a lot of them are bound to have a much higher ceiling.

No reason he can't have a great career overseas, but I don't see him ever sticking on an NBA roster.

that's reminiscent of the pep talk my mother gave me when i was nine. of course she correctly pegged that i had peaked at baseball around that time. what precipitated the talk was my maudlin fantasies of buying her a house first thing when i signed a big league deal. not that she could pick a winner, three divorces and i'm living proof of one of her four other disappointments
