The production value of national radio has hurt local shows. No question. Local hosts are aware of the national shows and try, often very unsuccessfully, to be witty and smooth in the same manner- except they lack the talent and more importantly, the producers to make hat work.

What usually comes across as funny on say, the Colin Cowherd show, comes across as lame and forced on a local show - no I did not hear the Nasal Fuente interview. Fake laughing, too much self reference, and provocation for the sake of getting threads like this one.

A saving grace of local radio would be, get this, to discuss local sports- but without the snark, smart a$$edness, and needless trolling and oh so witty I know the inside nuances of the local rube fanbase references.

So, because Memphis has struggled with football of late, and is playing a road game at UCLA, where we are likely to be a huge underdog, why not be oh so funny by referencing that with an even more provocative language like "demoralized..." The fact that the beginning of football season always brings hope will make such a quote even more oh so yuk yuk funny with oh so many yuk yuk self congratulatory pats around the studio, as a few mispiiii fans roll on the floor.

It is really really really bad.

Nasal reads this site. A bit of advice. Dial down the cheese. Discuss, in a reasonable manner, local sports. When poor, that is certainly on the table. Coach, do you think there will be any residual effect from the tough finish last season? As opposed to what if you get demoralized.

What is next...gee Butch, since utk got slaughtered by Oregon, twice, a few years back, what will you do if Oklahoma demoralizes your kids? Gee Hugh, in spite of you getting some moderate success at misppi, will another big loss to a really good team like Alabama demoralize your kids and when it doesm how will you handle it?

A$$- hole.

Agreed.

It's torture, but you aren't going to hear about the Tigers anywhere else, so I have to drop in online from time to time. I enjoyed the interview with CJF.

Louisville has long had a nightly radio talk show about Cardinal athletics. I have always said that if one of the stations here did that, it would be successful and certainly a boon for Tiger athletics.

Agree. If the local radio folks can't do it, bring in UofM Journalism Students. They would be better interviewers.

As it was, the interview was a waste of Coach Fuente's time.

I've thought the same thing - either a show dedicated to Tiger athletics or if one of the current shows did a dedicated Tiger segment daily. It's remarkable how little the radio shows talk Tiger football - granted, there hasn't been much to talk about on the positive side, but still. Outside of Paxton Lynch, I wonder if Vernon, Gaston, or Parrish could name a single football player. I've found myself listening less and less to the local guys, for this very reason. I realize they've got hours to fill, but why not devote a little of your time talking about the local university every now and then (and not just basketball, please).

The local talk radio for Norfolk/VA Beach is worse than in Memphis. Until two years ago, there was a Lapides-style local guy named Tony Mercurio who was rude to almost callers and very uninformed. He literally knew nothing.

He would have road shows at different restaurants where would feed his face while he routinely yakked about 20-something gals he'd like to date despite being in his 60's and tipping scales at over 500 lbs ... until he was finally fired after almost 26 years:

His replacement is a Boston transplant, Nick Cattles, who seemingly tries to tie everything to the Patriot and Red Sox.

But it is N/A as I listen to XM's College Sports Nation but the best show in my opinion, Bill King, just now received a demotion time.

I like some 68 shows. Memphis radio's main problem is it is all nba talk. aside from occasional tiger talk. I understand its the only big league in town but it doesn't appeal much to me what the beat writer for the kings has to say in july.

Honestly, I don't think it much matters what the beat writer for the Kings has to say in any part of the year. Poor guy. The Kings seemed cursed. lol Sacramento should have set them free.

Is it possible? Yes. Do you ask that question? No.

Not really a bad question considering how they basically folded their tent after losing to Louisville last season.

That was a completely different issue. The Louisville loss basically knocked them out of bowl competition. They played their hearts out in the game and were undone by a bogus fumble call by the officials. After that they were gassed and emotionally had a let down since they didn't have a chance at a bowl.

They will not be demoralized, no matter what happens at UCLA.

And it was a question meant not to inform Tiger fans but to needlessly prod. It would be a wasted question regardless of the head coach from any school interviewed.

Memphis sports shows are terrible compared to those I have heard in other cities (chiefly Nashville). I prefer listening to the Nashville sports radio than listen to Memphis sports radio on line despite my interest in the Tigers and the Griz.

Does nashville still have that sports radio show put on by the drummer of the black crowes? That was majorly entertaining - he'd have on Bobby Keys (rolling stones saxist) in the same show that they'd be talking football and baseball.

Music City. They wear it well.

Memphis sports radio either disappoints me, usually, or makes me livid, occasionally. Who needs to start their morning in either of those moods?

Ii still think Calkins has wasted his degree. Anyway, I would rather listen to Nashville radio and hear about Vandy than endure what passes for sports radio here. There is SO much they could talk about and explore about not only football, but other Tiger sports.
