I haven't paid attention to what's going on. Why was the water turned off?

Because people in Detroit have no money to pay for it.

Not paying their bills.

When I first heard the outrage over this, I thought Detroit had simply turned off water to sections of the city to save money, but they didn't. They just cut off water to people that weren't paying their bills.

I have no problem with it. Delivering water isn't free. The infrastructure required to get water to every home is extremely expensive.

Given that there are still parts of this nation where one has to dig their own wells for water it's clearly *NOT* a right....

City water stopped half a mile from my house. I'm on well water. On my own dime.

I wonder if these people are as concerned about sub-Sharan tribes - or any other group for that matter - whose access to water is limited or if they are just this involved because of the convenience of Detroit being next door.

Let's not discuss how much it costs to dig for a well, install a well, and then run the lines for the well. Much less the upkeep of said well. It's not free.

Oh hush, we don't need no stinking facts getting in the way of a progressive propaganda moment.

Agree 100%. Detroit needs to go after the deadbeats that can pay but aren't paying and work out something with the ones that legitimately can not pay their bill for whatever reason

You should sue the city; acting like a progressive for a moment wouldn't kill you.

^This. And it's not as if they were shut off the minute they were past due on their bill.

"The Council’s water campaigner, Emma Lui, says that the planned privatization of Detroit’s water system is the problem. “They are cutting off 150,000 households so that the company will look more lucrative to private investors."

Right! Because the loss of 150k households as customers aids their bottom line. 01-wingedeagle

I don't believe so. It's been a little time since last reviewing my copy of the Constitution and Bill of Rights, but pretty sure the "Right to water" is not included in there.

So, no. No right to water.

Did you guys catch the last line. They are trying to privatize it. Shutting off the deadbeats makes it more profitable. The public vs. private debate rages on. Those people who work at the water plant. Good paying union jobs. I take my kids on a field trip to the sewage and water treatment plants. They have classes of water plant operators. A class 1 is a 6 month degree and the starting salary is 48,000. We have over 400 municipal treatment plants in Ohio and 106 of them had openings in May. Two of my former students now have the class 1 certificate.

That's a good job you can raise a family on.

Now let's go the Koch brother privitization route. We pay the guy's 24,000 and all of that surplus goes into shareholders portfolios. The rich get richer and one more middle class job gets squeezed.

The battle rages on...............

Is this a joke??????

Yes getting rid of 150,000 dead beats that are a negative on your balance sheet most certainly would improve the bottom line............

Now in other breaking news.... 1+1 = 2

If the city wants to give the water away for free, then it should be free for all residents. And of course, therein lies the problem.
