Tennessee has experienced a steady influx of migration from other Southern states, and more recently from the rest of the country as well. Residents over 50 make up nearly two-thirds of the increase in migrants. In 1980, just 11 percent of the state's seniors were born in other states, but now that figure is up to 17 percent.

I bet a lot of them are in Nashville and Clarksville for military retirees. I can attest to the huge number of retirees who are moving from out of state to downtown Memphis, mostly from the North. They LOVE the lost cost of living and the entertainment and urban vibrancy and diversity and the architecture and views of the river, and the safety, and most of all, the friendliness of Memphians.

That is such a nice positive post!!! Had an apt downtown for 2.5 years. Absolutely loved it!

The traffic is hell but the weather is as close to perfection as you can get...stayed with a friend on the base there. Sat on the beach and watched those magnificent planes go in/out.

traffic isn't anything compared to LA ... you just need to know that you can't go anywhere from 5 to 630 ... 03-wink

I hope to end up Downtown in a few years.

Yes, it kills me to visit my daughter in Sarasota during the summer and see the thousands and thousands of empty condos just waiting for the snowbirds to return. If I could only stay in one of them for a couple weeks.....

Northern Cal...off the I-5 corridor, less than an hour from the Oregon border at 3800 feet on Western base of Mt Shasta.

Big views:

Mt Shasta right next door. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Shasta

Mt Eddy across the street. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mount_Eddy

Unlike Pacific NW there is lots of sun and 4 seasons. Not much culture, though, and no shopping to speak of for those who like such diversions. Lakes, outdoor sports but the downhill ski area is small.

I'm not sure what retirement means...lol. I haven't really thought about it. Too busy working.

There is nothing and I mean nothing more wonderful to me than water..lake, stream, ocean, waterfall..it is spiritual, relaxing, refreshing. And here I am land locked in OB, Ms. I may take you up on this..

I will be 65 this month. I have talked about retirement for YEARS!. I am going to work until 66 so there will be no penalty for working. BUT life has way of throwing curves..I have done nothing my entire life but work or go to school. No hobbies unless you count Tigers (since 1970). Now I don't know how I would adjust. Odd isn't it.

You sound like me, except I finally got tired of doing nothing but working.
