I honestly think there are 2 teams and 2 teams only that SF would make sense and that's Notre Dame or Nebraska.

Illinois & Tennessee would also work just fine.

People joke on UofI but they did bring 42k to SF when their fans KNEW they would have a crappy team and the game was vs Washington who has very little draw regionally.

Actually they were 2-0 at the time and had just whacked Cincinnati 45–17 so there was some false optimism the week leading up to it.

I don't think either Illinois or Tennessee would make the event attended well enough to make it worthwhile.

I wouldn't want to waste my time playing a Soldier Field game against Illinois. But you are completely wrong on the Tennessee front. They are consistently rated one of the best fanbases in ALL of college football and I would have no problem with NIU playing them, doubtful they would come to DeKalb though with how big of a fanbase they have.

Tennessee fans wont travel in outrageous number to see the opponent of NIU at Soldier Field. If it was say Notre Dame at Soldier Field I could see it. The only far away fanbase I could see flocking to SF to make it worthwhile would be Nebraska, those fans are probably the most obsessed in college football.

You have to realize that the game at Soldier Field wouldn't be the only reasoning for their fans to come. It would be the main reason, but you have to assume they would be making the trip as a 3-4 day vacation to see the city as a whole as well.

I saw this first hand as I work in the loop and saw a decent amount of Washington fans on the Friday before the Illinois game at Soldier Field.

But I just wonder if the city of Chicago would really have the draw it did with Iowa fans, Tennessee fans probably don't identify with Chicago like Iowa fans did in terms of a regional basis. It would be just another big city. I really think for a school like Tennessee , for it to draw 50k+ you would really have to have a more prime opponent.

...Chicago is a draw for people all around the world. It's not just a regional thing.

Maybe it would work, I think it would take just a mammouth marketing campaign though to convince Tennessee fans to come. It was kind of eye opening on the poor response from Wisconsin fans to that game. And that is just a really short drive away. I know you might be talking about another level of fan obsession with the Vols, but you are also talking about a much bigger commitment. I think they would come in good numbers, I just don't know if it would be anything close to a number to call it a "success"

Its not that hard if their payout comes from their allotment.

Its not like we have Jiff negotiating the contracts anymore!

That's true not having Compher around probably would help things. Regardless, I hope the emphasis going forward is not on SF games anyway as they are "empty calories" in terms of building a season ticket base/fan base.

I wouldn't mind a game at SF as long as the promise of these other BCS team's coming to DeKalb comes through.

One thing you do have to accept with the SF games, it does hurt the season ticket base. I just don't think we can afford any more hits to season ticket sales right now.

Not all Huskie fans have an unlimited amount of money to spend. For a single person a ticket is what 70 dollars + 40 to park, then plus 20 for refreshments, so that's like a season ticket right there in one game for most people. Many may choose to go to the SF game because of the dismal home scheduling/weeknight games providing no reason to get season tickets. Maybe like Redandblack said if you couple a SF game with a better home schedule, maybe people would be willing to pay more per year.

Sorry, but this makes no sense. What season ticket holder would decide to opt out of their season tickets to only go to one game instead? Don't blame the games at Soldier Field, blame the MAC for screwing over their own teams.

I don't think they would sell many of them at that kind of a price, it would be like 250 dollars. The other thing with these SF games, the novelty has faded, you just wont generate the kind of excitement and attendance as the first Iowa game.

The last comment I have about the SF games which I know people have stated before which I agree with, if they are held to maybe a frequency of once per 5 years, then it might be more reasonable.

I would possibly say once every 4 years to make sure every player gets a chance to play there.

I can see the argument on 5 years with the red-shirt year.
