Can the AAC sue over this name??
There is a new College sports syndicated network that's about to start up that involves our friends in CUSA and a few other leagues please note the name.... Sinclair Broadcast Group To Launch The American Sports Network; Enters Into Sports Rights And Content Development Agreements With Leading NCAA Conferences. Here is the link to the rest of the story.

My guess would be, only if the American Athletic Conference had the forethought to reserve/buy the name prior to it's use by this organization. It is food for thought. 07-coffee3

No, you can't sue because they used "American" in their name. Otherwise, you'd be liable to lawsuits from everyone from the makers of the movies/songs/book "American Beauty/Psycho/Pie/Woman" to Casey Kasum's estate for "American Top 40."

But it's a college sports network. Not a song or movie.

If the exact name wasn't reserved as I stated previously, I doubt they could or would file suit. Any of our legal types could make this even more clear for you by stating terms and defining the issue. 07-coffee3

Yes, the AAC could sue but they would lose.

I just don't like a college sports network dedicated to airing CUSA CAA etc having the name The American Sports Network. Seems it could cause confusion with casual fans.

Exactly! It's on two god awful stations in limited markets. Who gives a shet if FIU is playing at UAB and it's on the CW between two jerry springer re-runs..... It's pitiful and sad more than anything and no one will confuse it with the AAC product on the ESPN networks.

1. The issue there is your conference's generic name, not the generic name of the new Sam's Club Sports Network. ("American" has all sorts of positive associations, but the downside is that it's not a unique name.)

2. I don't think anyone casual-fan enough to confuse the AAC for the ASN or vice-versa is going to notice the existence of either the AAC or the ASN on MyTV.

I agree.

If you have to explain a joke it's not funny, so I'll accept my joke fail and explain; I was referencing Iowa suing Southern Miss over their similar logo, which does not look similar at all to me (other than being a bird and yellow).

EVERY conference with "BIG" in the name is generic. There are far more of those variations out there.

I get it now... But if you weren't in CUSA or watching the whole Iowa/SoMiss deal (which was absurd), I could see where it would have been lost.

Sinclair has 167 stations in its portfolio, in 77 markets and reaches almost 40% of US households. I think it's a pretty nice add.

Good point. And the Big East/10/12/South/West aren't suing (or being sued by) Bob's Big Boy, the creators of "Big!" starring Tom Hanks, Big League Chew or Big Red gum.

If the American wanted to force the issue and seek a name change for the network, they probably could and would prevail. It's debatable whether it's a worthwhile endeavor, though.
